Ku Klux Klan (KKK) is the name of several past and present secret domestic terrorist organizations in the United States, generally in the southern states, that are best known for advocating white supremacy and acting as vigilantes while hidden behind conical masks and white robes. The KKK has been known to utilize terrorism, violence, and lynching to intimidate and oppress African Americans, Jews, and Roman Catholics during periods of turmoil. The first Klan was founded in 1865 by veterans of the Confederate Army. Their main goal is to permute white supremacy in the aftermath of the American Civil War. The KKK quickly adopted violent methods.
At the time of Ulysses S. Grant's election to the presidency, white supremacists were conducting a reign of terror throughout the South. In outright defiance of the Republican-led federal government, Southern Democrats formed organizations that violently intimidated blacks and Republicans who tried to win political power. The most prominent of these, the Ku Klux Klan, was formed in Pulaski, Tennessee, in 1865. Originally founded as a social club for former Confederate soldiers, the Klan evolved into a terrorist organization. It would be responsible for thousands of deaths, and would help to weaken the political power of Southern blacks and Republicans.
THE CONTROVERSY OF MALCOLM X Ever since he first appeared as a spokesperson for the Nation of Islam, Malcolm X has raised many controversies. His revolutionary speeches influenced many disadvantaged black people. However, he was also severely criticized for his demands for total separation between blacks and whites in America. In his speeches, he often referred to the whites as the "devils". In his view, the white race in general was guilty for the suppression and sufferings of the black race.
The KKK was formed which was a protestant white man association in which discriminated against blacks and many other ethnicities. MAny African Americans who owned small businesses would find them burned down to the ground. Also, the creation of the grandfather clause and literacy tests were intended to keep blacks from voting. The Ku Klux Klan (KKK) was a racist, anti-Semitic movement with a commitment to extreme violence to achieve its goal for racial segregation and white supremacy. The KKK still exist today, however not to the same extreme as the Klan in its golden era in the 1920s. (1) The KKK was formerly established in 1866 by seven confederate civil war veterans, which focused its anger and violence on African Americans and on governments who supported the rights of African Americans. The whole purpose of the Klan was to “protect” the White Anglo-Saxon Protestant culture which was an old traditional cultural group; church on Sundays etc. and also to protect old American Values.
Jews and non-whites were viewed as sub-human and considered natural enemies because they were trying to overpower the white races. Located in East Peoria, Illinois, the creativity movement was one of the most notorious hate groups in the 1990s gaining publicity for its rapid growth and the violent incident in which members were associated with. Although the creativity movement was one of the Neo- Nazi group with the largest number of chapters in America at that time, the group soon became disorganized under the leadership of Ben Klassen leading to a couple of convictions and lawsuit brought upon members which eventually led to the suicide of Ben Klassen in 1993. Lynching was used as a weapon to scare the African Americans. Many questions are still asked today on why they killed not only African Americans, but innocent
The KKK was set up as a secret society. Its aim was to make sure that white people controlled society by terrifying black people and ethnic minorities. Also after 1877 many schools for black people were forced to close by white racists. Some schools were burned and students were badly beaten up. Furthermore in the Southern states of USA the abolition movement was resented.
It can destroy a person’s self esteem, community cohesion and even creates divisions in society. Racism has influenced wars, slavery, the formation of nations and legal codes. In addition, racism has been used as a powerful weapon encouraging fear and hatred of others in times of conflict and war. For this reason, during the Civil War, a huge presence of racism existed. FIGHTING HATE “Hate crimes are crimes committed against a specific race and ethnic group. Victims are targeted because of their race and ethnicity. The first recorded "hate crime" occurred in 1922. The Federal Bureau of Investigation encountered a rising Ku Klux Klan, white supremacist movement in Louisiana. Two people were kidnapped, tortured and murdered while thousands more received threats to their person.
