KEYS TO BEING A GOOD TRAVEL AGENT In The United Kingdom, travel agencies first made their appearance to cater to the very wealthy, the elite. In, “The role of service quality, perceived value, and relationship quality in enhancing customer loyalty in the travel agency sector”, Lai (2013) stated, when aviation technology was introduced it opened up ability to reach a wider population. The travel agency industry was booming. There were brick and mortar companies popping up everywhere (420). There was a time when a customer wanted to travel, the customer called their travel agent and had their travel agent do all the details for them, instead of doing themselves. Brady and Cronin (2001) stated, “After World War II people were able to afford little holidays to the beach. Travel agents have access to lower rates because they buy the trips from suppliers at a low rate and then a higher rate they sell it to the consumers; the difference becomes their profit. A travel agent makes things easier by handling all the little details including the research, price, date comparisons, the booking, and the paperwork (36)”. They have knowledge of obtaining visas, foreign currency, safety and many of the airline rules. The popularity of travel agents has decreased over the last 10 years (39). What would cause the travel agency business to lose it momentum? In 1996, the World Wide Web took traveling to a new level. Brown and Gremler (1996) stated, “who wanted to waste their time visiting the brick and mortar companies, when they could book travel in the convenience of their own home?” That year, 1996 Microsoft founded the travel booking site, Expedia (172-173). Within 5 years many more agencies popped up on the internet including, Travelocity, Priceline, Travelzoo, Hotwire, and TripAdvisor.
