Kali is one of the most well-known and worshipped Hindu Goddesses to this day. Kali is known as The Dark Mother and her bond with children is a relationship one would consider very unique. When it comes to children she forms a very intimate bond. Many people think of Kali as a destroyer but she destroys things only to recreate them again such as sin. It is believed that she goes into the darkness with us, and for us, to swallow our sins, worries and concerns.
Reaction to Kali The goddess Kali is an influential figure in the Hindu religion, her name originating from the Sanskirt root Kal which means One of the most famous stories of Kali was how she helped Durga stop the demon Raktabija, whose blood produced duplicates of itself. Kali stopped Raktabija by drinking its blood and eating its duplicates. According to David Kinsley, writer of theTantric Visions of the Divine Feminine: The Ten Mahavidyas , Kali is first mentioned in Hinduism as an actual goddess around 600 CE, in which theses texts "usually place her on the periphery of Hindu society or on the battlefield.” Today Kali serves as a goddess to many people, regardless of caste, as they gather together at shrines and temples to honor and offer sacrifices to Kali. She is often thought of as a goddess of destruction and death, but many believe that she is only perceived in such a negative way because she is misunderstood. Therefore, many worshipers see Kali as the “eternal light” who only destroys ignorance, sin, and decay.
Although she does not represent any one woman in particular she bares resemblance of every woman at once. The abstract quality of her composition also suggest further importance and emphasis of the reproductive elements of this figure (Janson, 10). Similar to
Female Representation in Ancient Art and Society There is no question that the role women play in society has transformed significantly throughout the course of history. Some cultures were centered on the female entity as a symbol of life and fertility, while others strayed towards a more masculine focus. In many ancient cultures, it seems as though women were revered in a sacred light. Although there are scarce written records, if any, left behind by those people, we can draw conclusions about women in society based on the remaining pieces of visual art in existence today. Also, by looking at the composition, technique, and structure of these works, we are able to get insight on what the technology and culture in daily life were like in those far-away times.
As stated in the article by Robin Henig, “Over the centuries, women have mauled and manipulated just about every body part – lips, eyes, ears, waists, skulls, foreheads, feet… (55). With certain ways women try to build their confidence level for their visual appearance, they go through a great deal of risks; consequently, severe dangers are more likely to occur, also expressed in the article. In this article, Robin Marantz Henig explains and exposes many different forms and ways woman have deliberately made changes to their bodily figures to fit in the standards of perfection in beauty. She clearly isn’t in favor of these practices from her statement in the article, “The crazed quest for beauty at any cost had led to some bizarre practices along the way” (56). Exactly, very bizarre practices that woman go by to feel better about there appearance rather then their health.
The Japanese American Internment Camp is no exception to her amazingly powerful works. While the pictures mentioned in this essay focused on statements and innocence, Lange also had many of her photos in this collection focusing on other aspects; such as courage, honor and photos of forlorn looks, sad eyes and faces of people that have been humiliated. In other works Lange has made leaps and bounds in the art of photography. Even though other works of hers such as “Migrant Mother” are very famous, the collection discussed in this paper has been just as
Durga is the husband-less goddess, representing the core of every goddess , and the purest form of Shakti energy.Without the presence of Shaki energy given to the Gods, these powerful deities would be quite powerless; Shakti is the driving force of creation and keeps the cosmic balance alive and working. The divine feminine is paramount and worshiped regularly in the Hindu religion. Saravati is the Hindu Goddess of knowledge, artistic skill, and fine speech. Speech and knowledge play an important role in Hinduism. Alain Danielou points out: “ Speech is the power through which knowledge expresses itself through action.
Essay #2 (Women Who Live Evil Lives by Martha Few and Autobiography of a Slave by Juan Francisco Manzano) In the book Women Who Live Evil Lives by Martha Few, Few makes the argument that despite the vast ethnic and gender discrimination that plagued Santiago de Guatemala during the time of the Spanish inquisition, women especially women of color were able to exercise more cultural authority then historians have previously acknowledged. Her analysis of the perspective of the “mujeres de mal vivir” or “the women who live evil lives” tells us the often overlooked story of women who to use Few’s words, “drew on ideas and practices of religion and the supernatural and reformulated them to assert their authority and power in the local community”(5). She goes on to say that “Women then used this authority and power to overtly challenge gender, racial and colonial hierarchies and intervene in conflicts and problems in daily life”(5). This new found perspective for examination allows us a better understanding of the hierarchical aspects of both the culture at large as well as the slave culture. Within both of the cultures, societal role was often determined by ethnicity as well as gender and Few points out that the perspective of historians has always been shaped by the assumption that this discrimination led to the utter oppression of those in marginalized groups.
It’s not just that she was a women that impressed me but her outward denial to conform to a world that oppressed her and women all across Europe based on sex. Not many people have the courage to stand up for their beliefs but she did so, knowing that support for her cause was scarce to none. She defended a women’s place in society, as well as flourishing in the literary realm and exercising her ability to converse, challenge, and reason in the art of rhetoric. Through these reasons and preservations, Christine De Pizan merits more than a three quarter page in a history of rhetoric
Many examples from the movie can also be seen in the article “More Than the Usual Variety of Curves”. In A League of Their Own there were many issues relating to gender. The scout Earny searched for women who were not only talented but were very attractive. The movie exaggerated the struggle of being a single woman raising a young child.
