BULLYING MADE HER LIFE HELL The bullying started for K. when she was in year 11. Until then her life had been happy. She had loving, supportive parents, she was popular at the prestigious Blue Mts private school, did well in exams and was an acknowledged athlete who had the potential to become a a candidate for the Olympics. “Life was great, no one had anything against me, I actually liked going to school, to the extent I didn't yearn for school holidays,” said K. That was before bullying entered her life and the school, according to K., appeared powerless against it. It all started happening when children, from another school, joined this one and a new element came into being. “I knew some of these kids through family connections,” said K. “and was happy to see them.” The new arrivals were also happy to share K.'s popularity and began to invite her to their regular Friday night get-togethers, something K. was not accustomed to doing. These children, mainly early teens the same as K. some older, would gather in the home of a student whose parents were out, or invisible. But shock, horror, K. realised these kids were into alcohol and drugs. “When I saw the alcohol, then the drugs, I though oh my gosh, how am I going to handle this,” said K. She had never drank anything alcoholic before and, besides, she was an athlete and didn't want to compromise her fitness. “I was torn, they had been so friendly towards me and I didn't want to ruin it,” she confessed. “But I refused to take any drugs.” To avoid being pressured to take drugs she agreed to a beer. “I wasn't keen on drinking even that, I didn't really like alcohol anyway” At first she didn't tell her parents, who would have been horrified.
