Velychko 1 How We Eat Overeating habits that people have can cause health problems. Obesity can be a medical or a psychological problem and it’s one of the major problems that people have. People can have these habits of overeating because of many reasons. Both readings, “The Wage of Sin” by Francine Prose and “In Gorging, Truth”, by Jason Fagone argue about reasons of overeating. People are obese because of society that surrounds them.
Approximately one third of American adults were believed to be obese in 2013. Obesity has many different effects, some are short term and others are long term, but all are negative. Some short term effects are that risk factors for cardiovascular disease immediately increase, which is known as high blood pressure and high cholesterol. This can also be a long term effect because it affects young people when they get older. Obesity can also cause diabetes, heart disease, joint problems, respiratory problems, cancer, metabolic syndrome, and psychosocial effects.
Childhood Obesity pg.1 Childhood Obesity Sociology 111 Mrs. Roberts November 16, 2011 Childhood Obesity pg.2 Historically there has always been a problem with obesity in children. Chubby babies and toddlers were more likely to survive infections and contagious diseases, and overweight children and family members were often thought to be financially secure. Today being overweight puts a child at risk for developing chronic diseases such as type II diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol levels. Obesity can promote degenerative joint disease which will result in painful knees, hips, feet, and back. Childhood obesity does not affect just the child, it can be stressful on an entire family (Childhood Obesity, 1998, p.1).
David starts by teasing these overweight individuals that are bring a lawsuit against McDonalds, but then later admits that he used to be overweight as a child and was able to change his life around. He made a point to show health concerns with being obese and eating fast food regularly, such as type two diabetes which has risen about twenty-five percent since 1994. This raise in diabetes also requires much funding for the United States to spend to try to find a cure. David explains how there is very few alternatives for the youth of America because those health alternatives are more expensive and harder to find. False advertising is also another unpleasant practice that fast food companies use to lure in costumers.
Child Obesity in America Child obesity is a growing problem in American societies these days. Children are getting bigger and bigger and the major cause to this problem is growing number of fast food restaurants, unhealthy diet, not enough nutrition in the body and lack of exercise. Moreover, there are plenty of statistics that prove that child obesity in America is at epidemic levels. Research has proven that in the last 30 years, the number of children who are overweight has tripled to 15%. Another research shows that one third of nation’s children are obese.
Childhood Obesity Majority of children in today’s society are decreasing the time spent in physical activities as they are spending more time playing video games and watching TV. Due to their sedentary behavior they are increasing the level of excessive body fat to their weight (Whitker, Robert). This issue of childhood obesity has become an epidemic in America. The Colorado University research shows that within last couple of decades the obesity level among children and adolescent has doubled (P. Kendall). The increase in excessive body fat leads to serious health problems such as high blood pressure, type two diabetes, and other serious health risks (Estarbrooks, Paul).
With all of our resources, advanced technology, and economic power we as a country cannot seem to control this problem. According to research data done by the Center Disease of Control (CDC), approximately 17% or 12.5 million of children and adolescents aged 2-19 years are obese (CDC). Since 1980, obesity prevalence among children has almost tripled. It is no longer a concern of appearance; it has now become more of concern of health. Childhood obesity is a growing health problem in America’s youth, if not taken
As these children grow older, they are actually, in many cases, at high risk of being seriously injured or even killed by this harmful thing, obesity. Only six years ago a survey was taken up that led to knowledge of estimated deaths caused by obesity-related illness. The astounding statistic shows that 112,000 to 325,000 American adults die from it every year. This means that people with the highest BMI’s are twice more likely to die prematurely than the average American. Here are a few examples of the illnesses caused by obesity: type 2 diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular (heart) disease, and asthma.
Obesity, having excessive amounts of body fat, impairs health and has serious physical and mental consequences. (http://www.bmicharts.org, 2011) Causes of childhood obesity There is a variety of factors associated with causing childhood obesity. Although genetics can affect weight, evidence shows that lifestyle choices and environmental factors have the largest impact. Little physical movement and/or consuming too many calories can result in considerable weight gain. These sedentary lifestyles contribute greatly to childhood obesity.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, obesity rates have tripled in America's youth and adults since 1980 America needs to understand that not the only people getting larger, but so are their children. We are leading children to poor health and a poor understanding of what exercise and being active can do for you. With schools limiting PE classes and sporting budgets, exercise has been something only merely talked about rather than being practiced. Children are being diagnosed with Cardiovascular disease which is one of the leading causes of death in our nation and many other chronic diseases. Because of the significance of fast food chains in America, we feel the urge for an easy meal, Americans, in general, immediately look to the fast food nation for a quick suppression to their hunger.
