Curley’s wife’s obsession with herself ultimately leads to her death. She knows Lennie is supposed to stay away from her, but thrives on his attention and wants his praise for her soft hair. It is not coincidental that she ends up losing her life because she didn’t want Lennie to mess up her hair. This final event sums up Curley’s wife’s role fairly neatly. Steinbeck presents Curley as a woman with huge dreams and hopes who aspires to be famous in Hollywood and life a king size life.
During a talk at the annual awards conference, Burns talked about how her mother, who raised Ursula single, in one of the worst New York City Public Housing Projects, loved to give advice. Ursula was the middle sibling among three. Her father was not around, but her mother was a confident woman who always expected great things from her kids. She taught Ursula how to strive and move up. Moving With Martha Martha Graham was a famous dancer who brought a different kind of dancing to the world. Her dance moves changed the world of dance forever. Martha Graham would be represented as a person different than most others. In the novel Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell, which is a non- fiction self help, Graham would be represented as an outlier. A cult grows in America chapter really talked about how the cult is taking over the American society. Society, family and friends pressure women to look a certain way which leads to extreme disorders. Hesse-Biber interviewed young women who were in the cult and you are able to get a point of view from a past cult member. One person really stood out the most to me that Hasse-Biber mentioned was Delia. In conclusion, I applaud Ehrenreich for taking a stance against Wal-‐Mart and deciding to leave her job there. However, many employees of that company live pay check to pay check and have no spare money to sustain themselves while looking for another job. It is my belief that Wal-‐Mart understands this and decided to milk their employees for every extra dollar they can get to maximize the profit for the organization. A more realistic approach for Ehrenreich, if she was actually a minimum wage worker, would have been to form a union and strike against Wal-‐

The article “Raunch Culture” by Ariel Levy discusses how life in the twenty first century has become very raunchy and erotic. She talks about how easy it is to blame the males of our culture for objectifying women. However, it is the women who are volunteering to have these pornographic or racy photographs and videos taken of themselves. Even women athletes are posing for scantily clad pictures, and they are getting more attention for that than their specialized sporting events. This article discusses that women taking control of their sexuality and objectifying themselves are not, in fact, the same thing.
By the nurse saying yes, and by her encouraging the patients to out do each other it is showing that she is gaining enjoyment from their pain even though she is telling them that it is for the betterment of them. Delores umbridge uses bribes to get what she wants. She manipulates her students by telling them they will get extra credit if they join the “inquisitorial squad”. When she suspects that there is something going on behind her back she gets her students to spy for her as she cannot do it herself. She has made them think that this is for them as they will get extra credit for joining, however it is just so she can gain control.
Skeeter’s mom could be considered a bit sympathetic character from the story. A major scene that can explain this would be when Constantine’s daughter showed up at her house while the Daughters of the American Republic were there. They disliked the fact that Constantine’s daughter disobeyed her, so they pressured Charlotte to do something about it. You can easily see Charlotte’s hesitation her face; and even though she didn’t want to, she had to fire Constantine in order to look good in front the Daughters of the American Republic. 4.
