Journal Entry on My Visit to Baghdad

(1283) Tuesday 11th July As I reached the city of Baghdad, it made me feel full of excitement and joy. I never thought of the capital to have spotless streets, they were narrow but I, in my eyes could not see any sign of litter. When I was walking around, I met an army officer, Hamid outside the gates. I saw others with the similar-looking uniform, white shirt with 2 or 3 badges stuck on the grey jackets. The trousers were the same colour, grey with a blend of sap green, the socks were white. It looked as if they were guarding the centre of the city. Hamid kindly showed me around the city. As we started our way through the golden gates which were designed in a way to attract passers-by, I could see such a stunning emerald-green dome, glimmering in the daylight, right in the middle of the city. There were many sights he showed me, there were beautiful gardens and flowerbeds around the city. The flowers had so much scent that when I hadn’t even gone through the gardens I knew where I was going. Fountains flowing with icy cool water especially made the gardens look even more beautiful. As my first day in Baghdad ends, I feel excited about what I will experience tomorrow. I remember the way the horses trample around the city in London, yet they do not scare the people but leave an awful lot of mess in the streets. Here, there is no sign of horses going around; they are kept with the owners when not in use, safe and sound. As I see in my window, when the night comes, more people come out in the streets and go to the markets to buy. Maybe I will come out as well, although not today, as it is only my first day.
