Overall, I am more convinced by Koch’s essay than Bruck’s essay just because it appeals to me on a more emotional level, and causes me to want to keep the death penalty. Although I admire that Bruck tried to appeal to the audience in a more intellectual tone, I still feel that his essay was lacking, and will not adequately convince the reader to vote against the death
Neil Postman believes our society is closer to Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World than George Orwell’s 1984 because of our society’s addiction to television. Huxley feared that no one would want to read books and that people would become passive and egotistical. He dreaded the day that the truth would carry little power and pleasure and love would control the public. Huxley’s worries become terrifying realities when one observes how much television has overtaken the American people’s lives. Ridiculous television statistics, youth corruption, and the need for “TV Turnoff Week” prove that television is an evil.
He does this because he believes the data speaks for itself and he doesn't need a strong argument. For Television, he cites a study from 1992-1996 by Myrn Weissman about the huge increase of depression in the United States, which Lasn attributes to television through some inductive logic. As for the internet, a brief summary of a study done by Stanford University is used, which explains the widely known concept of “You can't be in two places at the same time.” Lasn argues with the Stanford study that people spending time checking their emails or even just on the computer spend less time with their family, when in reality, time spent anywhere takes away from the time that can be spent on anything else. Lasn then “cites” an unnamed study from 1992 in the United States which concludes that we have become a single competitive
There is a saying that goes “don’t judge a book by its cover” but that’s exactly what consumers do. By the time thy use it they don’t they might not like the product and then move on to the next popular one. When an item or service is advertised it is sometimes played over and over maybe 10 or more times on one channel. This might make people tired of watching the commercial then when they go shopping they remember that that is the product I dislike watching the advertisement of and not buy it. Now when you rarely watch a commercial and maybe add humor or sorrow in an advertisement they say wow I remember that commercial it was funny or it was sad so they get it just because they remember it.
Although Schwartz attempts to provoke a strong message, he neglects the use of logical support and credibility throughout the article. Schwartz discusses the severe discrimination and taunting overweight people deal with in society, followed by the dangers of dieting. Schwartz’s solution to these dangers, quit dieting. Dieting, for Schwartz, is described as cannibalism, starving until one’s body is surviving primarily off of its own fat. Living in an obese society would promote self acceptance.
Many people argue that technology is actually causing us to lose touch with each other and reality in general. In Thinking Outside the Idiot Box, Dana Stevens lashes out against claims that watching television will actually make you smarter. Stevens’ piece is a response to an article written by Steven Johnson titled Watching TV Makes You Smarter. Stevens denies Johnson’s statements by saying that watching TV only
K. V. ENG 101 3/31/14 To Ban or Not to Ban In Dennis Baron’s, Don’t make English Official- Ban it Instead he is insisting that instead of making English the official language of the United States, we should just get rid of it altogether. In his small article he manages to whip up six small arguments to convince the readers of his ludicrous proposal. Rather than actually convincing the readers, his points are unclear, sometimes confusing and unsatisfying. In the end he doesn’t actually set up a solution for his readers, and leaves them with the whole “so what was the point,” feeling. Through his poor perspectives and unfocused essay, I am far from convinced that English should not be the official language but banned.
When Siegler tells about going out to eat with his mom and having to check his phone under the table, it contradicts the whole point the rest of the article seems to make, Siegler admits that “cell phone usage is frowned upon in restaurants for a good reason, it can be annoying”. But as he boldly explains later in the article “What’s annoying to me isn’t someone
Younger generations are mimicking what they see in movies and television shows, while forgetting to do important tasks, such as focusing on schooling. It is obvious that a dreadful trend is developing within our country. A dangerous message is being sent out by pop culture and those influenced by the media are wasting away into a mind state of pure stupidity, because stupidity is what is being promoted. There are some cases where being intelligent and independent with one’s thoughts have not been a key factor to becoming successful, the cases are rare but it is a possibility. Skoble’s reasoning for this uncommon situation is that the individual has either stole to reach their achievements or attained them by inheritance (412).
Today I want to try my best to persuade you why you should read books. It is a disappointment that nowadays people read books less often due to the widespread of technology Books were v hundred years ago, but with the invention of radio, television, and the Internet and computer games, people careless for reading books. However, once you complete reading a great written book it will have a great effect on it will motivate you to become a better person and increases your knowlage a lot and provide you with great inspiration. Some people argue that television in the present days is much more informative and interacting I agree on that to some extent. Television, on one hand, offers a colourful motion picture, whereas, the books, on the other hand allows you to think imaginatively with the characters in the book and their background story and the atmosphere that the story takes place. There are also people wondering why they would read from books rather than from online websites? spending hours reading from internet can cause you headaches and pain in your eyes, on the other hand books dosent cause you headaches nor problem in your eyes no matter how long you read except if you are reading it from a wrong angle .
