John Proctor and Reverend Hale In the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller, the Salem witch trails are occurring, many innocent people are being accused of witchery. This occurs because many of the girls are found dancing and chanting different lyrics in the woods in the beginning of the play-this is a sign of witchcraft. The girls confess that people of Salem are sending their spirits to hurt them and that they are also communicating with the devil. Through out the play, John Proctor and Reverend Hale change because of their circumstances that they undergo during the trials. John Proctor is a farmer on the outside of Salem. The people in Salem think of him as a good, honest, upright man but like many he has his secretes. When the witch trails started John knew he could end the trails but did not want to ruin his reputation as well as his name. Proctor knew to stop the trails he must tell the court that he had committed adultery and had slept with Abigail Williams. When his wife Elizabeth Proctor was accused for witchery John knew he must do everything he could to prove to the court she wasn’t a witch and Abigail was lying. Although John wanted to do everything for his wife he was not ready to admit to the court what he had done instead he used Mary Warren. Mary Warren was a young lady who took Abigail’s job at the Proctor household and was also one of the girls who were lying about seeing people’s spirits in the court. “She never saw no spirits sir” John Proctor said to Danforth. (88) When Mary told him that she and the other girls were just pretending about seeing the spirits he is unsure if Mary is telling the truth. This shows how John Proctor is slowly but surely turning into a coward, he is willing to throw a young girl under the bus to save his reputation and name, this is the first time we see John Proctor character change.
