Question 1 What is Job Satisfaction and why do you think it is important in an organization? Critically examine the factors that could affect the degree of job satisfaction. Support your answer with relevant work-related examples. Introduction Job satisfaction is the degree to which people like their jobs. Some people enjoy work and find it to be a central part of life or in other word, passion. Others hate to work and do so only because they must. The study of the causes and consequences of these important employee attitudes is one of the major domains of industrial-organizational psychology and organizational behavior. In addition, the assessment of employee attitudes such as job satisfaction has become a common activity in organizations in which management is concerned with the physical and psychological well-being of people. (Spector, 1997) Factors That Influence Job Satisfaction a) Environmental factors Communication overload and communication underload One of the most important aspects of an individual’s work in a modern organization concerns the management of communication demands that he or she encounters on the job. Individuals in an organization can experience communication over-load and communication under-load which can affect their level of job satisfaction. Communication overload can occur when “an individual receives too many messages in a short period of time which can result in unprocessed information or when an individual faces more complex messages that are more difficult to process.” (Farace, Monge, & Russell, 1977). Due to this process, “given an individual’s style of work and motivation to complete a task, when more inputs exist than outputs, the individual perceives a condition of overload which can be positively or negatively related to job satisfaction.
