JFT2 Task 2 Organizational Management Develop an action plan The Utah Symphony had a great deal of talent, but has been unable to find a strong source for financial success. The potential merger builds on the strengths and weaknesses of each organization creating a better future for both. Strengths, The Symphony have become one of the first orchestras to tour internationally. The musicians employed by the Utah Symphony received a full time salary as well as a year- long contract. They were well managed and financially able to tour several cities and perform hundreds of concerts. Due to the weakening of the economy, the bursting of the internet bubble and subsequent collapse of the stock market and the tragic events of September 11, 2001 had led to a decline in public (e.g., government subsidies) and private ticket sales and individual, corporate, and foundation pledges, support for the arts. This trend had significantly hindered an already financially strapped arts community and left them to scramble to find other ways to replace lost revenue in order to maintain their organization. The Utah Symphony held its first concert on May 8, 1940. In 1947, Maurice Abravanel, an experienced maestro took over and spent 32 years vociferously defending his musicians and securing them full time professional status. In 1993 Symphony Hall was renamed to Abravanel Hall in his honor. It is touted to have award winning architecture and out of this world acoustics. The symphony not only performs 70 concerts in Abravanel Hall, it regularly travels around the west performing in the states of Utah, Wyoming, Nevada and Idaho. Strengths 1. The Symphony performed over 200 concerts 2000-2001 2. Amongst the 20 leading symphonies in the United States 3. The Symphony went from part time to full time status under the leadership of the great maestro Maurice Abravanel.
