M1: Discuss the nature-nurture debate in relation to the development of an individual. The definition of learning through ‘nature’ is that things that we know which are innate. These things are biologically caused and genetically inherited. The definition of ‘nurture’ is the effect of the environment has on our learning. The nature-nurture debate is all about whether genetics (nature) or our environment (nurture) is responsible for our behaviour and development.
Babies and scientists “think, observe, formulate theories, make predictions, and do experiments. Throughout this essay I am going to discuss the cognitive development theories of Piaget and Vygotsky. These two theorists were influential in forming a scientific approach to analysing the development process involved in cognition. Cognition is the procedure involved in thinking and mental activity, such as problem solving, memory and attention (Flanagan, 1999, p.72). Both theorists said that a child’s cognitive development took places in stages but the way in which these theorists described the way children go through these stages was completely different.

Genes provide the instructions for structuring amino acids which in turn influence the proteins within our body cells. Genes process the chemical basis of our biology. Depending on the genes we inherit and the environmental influences we are exposed to, we will act apon a situation differently.
The theory is based on different levels on thinking, and no level has the same form of thinking as the others. The child is not able to continue on the path of cognitive development until it has been able to successfully reason with each of these stages. There are two main modules of Jean Piaget’s theory; the underlying principals and terms of the theory, and the stages of development for the child. Schemas: Schemas are sets of knowledge and ideas stored in the mind to help understand and explain the environment around the individual. Schemas represent the child’s certain aspect of their world.

Cognitive development is how and when we develop and use mental abilities and changes that occur in mental abilities throughout our life span. The new outlook of cognitive capabilities on infants was mostly initiated by a Swish Psychologist named Jean Piaget. (1896-1980). Piaget’s theories on development of cognitive abilities were 1st translated into English in the 1920’s. Researchers have tested and advanced his theories and many existing views in cognitive psychology are based on Piaget’s theories.
As psychological research continues throughout the world, many theories are constructed based on hypotheses and different theories on how people learn, live, and grow. The disputes on these theories range about a vast number of entities of human development, but most of the arguments focus around the nature vs. nurture controversy. In this controversy, theorists believe that nature means “inborn biological givens—the hereditary information we receive from our parents at the moment of conception,” (7, Berk) and nurture means “the complex forces of the physical and social world that influence our biological makeup and psychological experiences before and after birth”. (7, Berk) Personally, I feel that this controversy should never have the word “versus” involved, because I feel that both nature and nurture play an integral role in human development. More specifically, I believe that Erik Erikson’s psychosocial theory most adequately explains my beliefs and philosophy on how we, as humans, develop.
