Many Americans believed that there was only the black slavery. Yet until the 1660’s indentured servitude was the common way in the colonies. With the establishment of European colonies in America, it was quickly found that there was too much work for the settlers to do by themselves. The Jamestown settlement had the first indentured servants arriving within the first decade. [1]In the beginning the Virginia Company of London would pay to have servants transported across the Atlantic Ocean.
Many African slaves worked in the fields with rice, indigo, and tobacco. The “Middle Passage” stood for the critical section of the maximum Mass Movement in of the humanity in history which was the molding of the “Atlantic World”. Towards the end of the African slave trade for more than triple centuries the Atlantic slave trade more than ten million Africans were taken to America of the millions many died in the transition. The ones that survived came from 1701 until 1810 when more Africans reached the New World. Many were mostly sent to the plantations such as the sugar plantations this was mainly in Brazil and in the Caribbean’s.
The slave trade impacted Africa’s population, turning it into half of what it was expected to be in 1850. Organization of the Trade: 1. Triangle trade is a trade network in which slaves from Africa were carried to the Americas, sugar, tobacco, and other goods were carried from the Americas to Europe, and European products were sent to the coast of Africa to trade for the slaves and start the whole network. Sub-Saharan Africa had much longer exposure to Islamic culture influences than to European cultural influences. Scholars and merchants learned to use the Arabic language to communicate with visiting North Africans and to read the Quran. Islamic beliefs and practices as well as Islamic legal and administrative systems were prominent in African trading cities on the southern edge of the Saharan and on the Swahili coast. During the three and a half centuries of contact between Europe and Africa before 1800, Africans yielded minimal territory to Europeans. Local African kings scrutinized the European trading posts that they permitted along the Gold and Slave Coasts and collected profitable rents and fees from these traders and merchants.
Ch.4 Sec 1: Slavery and Empire -Mercantilism realized: the triangular trade. -West Africa had become a thriving slave industry since the Portuguese had arrived while going to the West coast. His following attracted mostly upper class and intellectual blacks. He concentrated on the “talented tenth”, the most talented and intelligent African Americans. This alienated poorer blacks, who turned instead to Marcus Garvey. Garvey grew up in an impoverished Jamaican community. After minimal schooling, he traveled around Latin America and eventually ended up in England.
Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade The Atlantic slave trade began in the early sixteenth century and extended all the way to the late nineteenth century. It involved the transportation of millions of Africans to the Americas. These Africans were forced to leave their countries in order to become the slaves of the newly found American colonies. Just the journey across the seas to the America’s was highly inhumane cramming hundreds of people onto small boats. The reason that the African slaves were needed was because they were strong and good workers.
Many linguists trace the development of Black English back to the time of slavery and the slave trade. Thus, the history of Black English must date back to about 1619 when a Dutch vessel landed in Jamestown with a cargo of twenty Africans. (Smitherman, 5) During the slave trade, ships collected slavesfrom several different nations rather than just trading with one nation. The rationale that justified this action was simple; Africans from different nations spoke different languages and could not communicate with each other, and thus were incapable of uniting to overthrow the ship’s crew. In 1744 slave ship Captain William Smith wrote: "...the safest way to trade is to trade with the different Nations, on either Side the River, and having some of every sort on board, there will be no more Likelihood of their succeeding in a Plot, than of finishing the Tower of Babel," (Stoller, 19).
Agriculture was a big thing in Puerto Rico, and most of the Tainos left the island. African Slave took the Tainos place and fulfilled Puerto Rico’s needs. “Then in 1519, the small pox epidemic killed many Spaniards and most of the Tainos. Juan Ponce de Leon was killed, but Puerto Rico became a rich empire.” (Solboricua.com, 2012) In Puerto Rico,
