This religious association doesn’t stem necessarily from the fact that these were royal colonies because England was ignoring what was going on in these colonies at the time, and they were simply built and operated for business purposes. All of these colonies were established to produce and export cultivation such as rice and tobacco in Virginia and the Carolinas. People who came to these colonies were mainstream Anglican indentured servants who did not come to the new world for religion, but simply for the land and/or money. North Carolina was the product of the split in the earlier colony of Carolina. South Carolina was much more profitable colony while North Carolina was rarely noticed by the crown.
Today's rum bears little resemblance to the raw and grainy beverage consumed by the renegades and pirates of the Spanish Main. Christopher Columbus brought sugarcane, from which rum is distilled, to the Caribbean on his second voyage to the New World, and in virtually no time it became the regional drink. It is believed that Ponce de León introduced rum to Puerto Rico during his governorship, which began in 1508. In time, there emerged large sugarcane plantations. From Puerto Rico and other West Indian islands, rum was shipped to colonial America, where it lent itself to such popular and hair-raising 18th-century drinks as Kill-Divil and Whistle-Belly Bengance.
It was named by Juan Manuel in 1775. La Isla de los Alcatraces translates to “Island of the Pelicans”. The island doesn’t have much to offer with its swift currents, rough ground and very little food. After Juan Manuel was done with the island for 72 years, it was taken over by the military in 1847. The military used it “strategic values for the
Despite its imperfections, the Articles were able to provide the Colonies ability to conduct diplomacy and a sense of colonial unity. However it lacked many aspects to make a strong governmental organization. One of which is, the inability to regulate currency. During the Revolution, many colonies lacked any form of effective currency and as a result they developed their own state currency. Over time the currency lost its value due to inflation which devastated colonial economies.
Columbus’s goal was to reach East Indies by sailing west. Queen Isabella sent 3 ships with Columbus. When he reached the land, he thought he’d made it to the East Indies and mistook the people as “Indians.” But he actually found the “New World”. The Indians had no immunities in their system to built up over generations. Columbians traded corn, potatoes, tobacco, beans, peppers, manioc, pumpkin, squash tomato, wild rice, and also syphilis.
By 1700, their religious practices, family relations, and political differences led them in two different directions. New England was a refuge for religious separatists leaving England, while people who immigrated to the Chesapeake region had no religious motives. John Winthrop states that the Puritan goal was to form "a city upon a hill", which would represent a "pure" community, where Christianity could be pursued (Document A).To New England, religion was considered to be most important thing while the colonists that landed at Jamestown in 1607 were not as religiously inclined as the Puritans. The History of Virginia, written by the leader of the colony John Smith in 1624, describes how hard it was in the first few years at Jamestown (Document F). There was little food, new diseases, lots of quarreling between the settlers and they had many problems with the Indians (Document H).
However, The General History includes much information on the terrible living conditions and bad farming/planting of the colony formed by the group of settlers that Captain John Smith was within. For some reason, the entry of Christopher Columbus contains no information about a settlement of any sort, almost as if he and his crew stayed in the New World for only one day. From this point, both entries seem to be of equal reliability due to the equal lack of common information. When reading further into The General History, Captain John Smith writes about how his first encounter with live Natives in the New World was while he was on an expedition with two

Response paper #1 In history around 1493 it is documented that Native Americans as well as Africans, were enslaved and brought to Spain. During this time it was not abnormal for Christians or royal leaders to mistreat the natives, while enslaved. One man who contributed to inflicting horrible deeds, during this unjust period, was a man named Bartolome De Las Casas. In the book The Norton Anthology it is quoted “….in the Spain of 1493, neither Casas nor anyone else had time to reflect on the moral implications of the pageant taking place before their eyes. Going to Hispaniola himself in 1502 as a member of new royal governor’s party, Casas soon was participating eagerly in the exploitation of the natives”(35).
CJS 101 Margaret Callahan POLICING COMPONENT PAGE 1 The evolution of American policing began when early Europeans first arrived in America. They were surprised by the lack of organized law enforcement. After things got fairly well settled the job of maintaining order in the new colonies was given to Justices of the Peace. As the colonies changed into cities the Justice of the Peace system was not enough and it became time for an organized and salaried policeman. (THERE WERE NO POLICEWOMEN AT THIS TIME).
