When starting with others say you should except that other may not care for what you say causing controversy. It doesn’t always have to start out with a disagreement, but using other resources to start out a paper is always useful because later in the text the reader gets to see if you dis/agree with what others say. Once you have used what others have said be sure to continue it later through out the text. It reminds the reader what you are talking about and it allows you to keep track of not getting off the main subject. If you start jumping around in the text the reader won’t be able to follow along.
By calling into question the truth of his stories, he disorients readers who are expecting to read a standard fiction, where the events are undoubtably false. He also shows readers why reinventing a story may be more important than telling the story just as it is remembered. Norman Bowker disapproves of O’Brien’s first attempt to describe a horrific battle, and, therefore, O’Brien feels the need to rewrite the story. Essentially, O’Brien must remember the event in a new way that makes the story more real for Bowker and other readers. Finally, O’Brien explains to readers why stories must be told, even with the risk telling the story the “wrong” way.
Secondary Characters When one has finished reading a book and is asked about it, one usually only remembers the main characters and their actions in the story. Unless one analyzes a piece of literature in depth, one cannot begin to imagine how secondary characters not only change the plot, but through interactions with the central characters they allow the reader to see different sides of the main character throughout the story without the reader knowing. Secondary characters are important in literature because they impact character development, influence the action, and develop theme as shown through Friar Lawrence in Romeo and Juliet and Uncle Teru in Sound of Waves Through Friar Lawrence’s encounters with the main characters Romeo and Juliet, he has brought out Romeo’s fickle minded character and Juliet’s absolute desire to be with Romeo. After Romeo and Juliet meet at the party and talk of marriage on Juliet’s balcony, Romeo goes to Friar Lawrence’s cell to ask him to marry Juliet and himself. The Friar responds with, “Young men’s love then lies/ Not truly in their hearts but, in their eyes jesu maria, what the deal of brine/ Hath washes thy sallow cheeks for Rosaline!”(2.3.68-90).
Professional writers can no longer claim that they do not encounter struggles while writing their works. Using humor and elegance, Lamott proves to the reader that the struggles encountered by professional writers are the same struggles encountered by amateur writers. In order to complete a composed work, all writers must consider the reality existing within the writing process, write an unorganized elementary first draft, and block all pressures surrounding one’s writing. Author and character O’Brian tell the story in such a way to make it believable that the two different people are really the same person. His aim in the novel was intended to direct the readers more away from the technical facts and more towards the subjected facts. By doing this the reader could establish the bond between an audience and the soldier telling his story. In the end we learn “Story-truth is truer sometimes than happening –truth” (171. ), but determining what is reality and fiction can sometimes be
Gladwell stated what he wanted the readers to get out from his book and what we were expecting. Also, while at the same time Gladwell is persuading the readers to think the way he does. When I read this passage, my first initial thoughts were that learning how to control my judgments and first impressions is impossible. To me the statement, “be in control of your judgments” means the same as the statement, “I have control of my own heart beat,” which is impossible. My judgments are my own and it’s unique.
The central character in “The Dead”, Gabriel Conroy, goes through the story, speaking, yes, but his personality is not transmitted through speech. The audience gains a sense of who he really is by his personal in-dept thoughts and emotions. In the case of this story, it is more important that the audience receives the point of living and not so much the discussion between the characters. The story is written in this style owing to the fact that the goal of the writer is more concerned with having the readers comprehend the concept of life’s importance more so than understanding the plot and actions of the
Klejsierta Xhumari “If you prize your memories as they are, by all means avoid-eschew-writing a memoir” Annie Dillard (292). In this quote Dillard is trying to tell you that in a memoir writers change their real memories and make something new to make it more interesting for the reader. If you think that your memories have a big value and are significant for you than you should not write a memoir. Even though it may not be your intention to change them, but when you try to put them in a piece of paper it will become something that didn’t happen before but is all in a writers head or imagination. Dillard says that the work replaces the memories and you are going to lose those memories (292).
O'Brien creates an intentional paradox for his readers when he writes the violent, but grabbing story of Rat Kiley and then at the end of the story, tells the reader that the characters and events of the story did not happen just as he described them, but that they happened in a totally different way to other people. But he insists that the story is true. With this, O'Brien challenges the reader to discover the truth of the event. O'Brien gets the reader to figure out what fiction of this book is actually worth. Firstly, did O'Brien confuse the reader when he said that the events did not happen after the reader became involved in those events?
Dillard believes she must make her writing interesting, if it is dull people won’t read it. She also knows she must decide what to put in her writing and what to leave out, depending on how people would react to it. Faulkner doesn’t even think about that kind of stuff, he believes you should write about the emotions we experience and “help him endure and prevail.” Each of these duties are completely different, but yet, they both make sense and to help them
