Unit 8 Assignment IT331 Prof. Susan Ferebee Jeramie Reynolds 01/04/2014 1. Compare and contrast at least five technologies that are readily available for in-home Internet access. You should consider practical as well as technical differences in your comparison. Do not include Frame Relay or ATM as these are primarily larger scale business solutions. 1- Dial Up (slow connections from your phone cable) 2- DSL (fast connections from your phone cable) 3- Cable (fast connections by Cable, now with fiber optics cable) 4- Satellite (slow to fair connections via satellite) 5- Cellular (3G and 4G) (fair to fast connections via cellular network) 2. Explain the similarities and differences between Frame Relay and Asynchronous Transfer Mode. Also discuss what “5-byte cell tax” means in reference to ATM. Although both techniques are based on end to end delivery of quantized data, there are many differences in terms of sizes of the data quanta, application network types, controlling techniques etc. ATM uses fixed size packets (53 bytes) for data communication; frame relay uses variable packet sizes depending on the type of information to be sent. Both information blocks have a header in addition to data block and transfer is connection oriented. Frame Relay is used to connect Local Area Networks (LAN) and it is not implemented within a single area network contrast to ATM where data transfers are within a single LAN. ATM is designed to be convenient for hardware implementation and therefore, cost is higher compared to frame relay, which is software controlled. Therefore frame relay is less expensive and upgrading is easier. 3. Technological advances are only one of many factors that play into how technology infrastructure develops. The social decision to break-up AT&T had a significant impact on the telephone infrastructure. Describe how the infrastructure
