A simple plot frames the story: the family goes on an outing to attend a family party, the fiesta of the title. They take a newly purchased van, the smell of which causes poor Yunior throw up; so before they leave for the party, Yunior's father refuses to feed him. The van, a symbol of the family's rising prosperity in the US, is a source of pride for the father, but a nuisance to Yunior, whose sensitive stomach is a figurative barometer of his family's troubles: as their prosperity grows, so, too, does his parents' marital discord. Yunior is no innocent, and he is aware of his father's philandering. Yunior's knowledge is revealed in small flashback vignettes that interrupt the party scenes.
In a somewhat sub-plot, Biff wants to try again at his city life and get a good job that will not only take care of his families’ financial problems, but will also make his father proud of him. Another sub-plot suggests that Willy once had an affair, this somewhat strained his relationship with his son. The overall inciting incident of the play is when the mother tells Biff about what’s really going on with his father. That they’ve been borrowing money to pay their bills, their father drives all over the country and doesn’t actually sell anything. She also tells her two sons about how their father is suicidal and she has found a piece of rubber tubing in the basement that he will use to kill himself.
Mr. Younger had many pleasant and joyful moments stolen from him in this novel due to his irresponsible actions. For example, one evening Ruth had received a phone call. The caller was the wife of the man that Walter drives for, Saying walter had been a no-show to work for the past three days. “Mama: What you been doing for these three days, son?” (105) Walter replied by telling her he spent his work time just driving, roaming the streets of their small are, and drinking at the Green Hat.

After finding out Oscar lost his job, he gets called from his sister Chantey, who needs to borrow $300 to make rent.
