Is using a mobile phone dangerous? By Calum Hughes The electromagnetic spectrum shows how wavelengths differ. These wavelengths range from 1000m long to 10-12m. Certain wavelengths pose a danger due to the radiation they give off; this depends on their wavelength and frequency. At the start of the electromagnetic spectrum there is low energy and frequency waves with long wavelengths, but at the end there is high energy and frequency waves with short wave lengths. Radio waves have the lowest frequencies and longest wavelengths, while gamma waves have highest frequencies and shortest wavelengths. Mobile phones use microwaves to transmit messages to and from networks to satellites to phones. Microwave transmitters and receivers can be located on buildings and masts and can communicate with the mobile telephones in their range- hence if you’re in the countryside away from these transmitters/ receivers, you may not be able to get any signal. Mobile phones are so widely used because they allow people to stay connected with friends loved ones: ‘anytime, anyplace, anywhere, anyhow! Call me!’ -Debbie Harry in the Blondie song ‘Call me’, 1981. They have many social, safety benefits and allow people to stay connected and contact people in emergencies, although many (such as my mum) are sceptical of its value to modern society and say that it is ruining manners and communication in our world today. Some people think that mobile phones, because of the microwaves they transmit and receive, may be a health risk. This theory is not accepted by everyone, as the intensity of the microwaves is too low to damage tissues by heating (the heat rise is similar to of that if you wear a hat), and microwaves are not ionising. However, many people are still concerned that mobile phones might have the potential to cause certain types of cancer or other health problems. One example of
