According to the World Water Council, approximately 1.1 billion people live without clean drinking water in the world. Water is the most important element on our earth today. Every living organism on our planet needs water in order to function properly and survive. We need water to drink, for cooking and hygienic purposes, agriculture, and much more. Water has the power to move people. Whether it is to settle near water or to get away from too much water, since the beginning of development, humans have been moving for water. There have been many conflicts and struggles regarding the distribution of water. In order to preserve our fresh water for the future, we need to figure out our problems dealing with the fresh water, the solutions and how to share the water with the world. It is clear that the way we are living now has put us in a global water crisis. A major obstacle our society faces in this era is the fact that it is nearly impossible to provide an adequate amount of fresh drinkable water to the world. With the world’s drastically increasing population of over 7 billion people, this issue has affected our natural resources. The global water cycle shows that the renewable fresh water is not greater than the existing human demand. A larger population also means that it will affect economic and social costs. Every year, agriculture demands increasing amounts of fresh water to meet our food demands. A higher population leads to a higher demand for energy and hydropower. Maude Barlow, who works with the fights for the human right to water, is committed to the view that international trade institutions, in company with extremely powerful transnational corporations, are the cause of the world water crisis.
