There are many reasons to worry about it. This social media is hurting our society in such way that it causing harm to one’s privacy, it disseminates misinformation, and effect on student’s grade. It is clear that social media is hurting our society by putting one’s privacy and security at risk. In the article “Teens Privacy Is Threatened by Social Networking” author Peter Bazalgette said, “Can you truly delete entries from social networking sites with the confidence they no longer exist on a server somewhere? You cannot” (Bazalgette p.1).
Monica Reis EGL-311 Controversy Concerning Cyber Bullying In the 21st century cyber bullying has become a part of our everyday lives. It is deliberating harming an individual or group of individuals through information and computer technologies. This fast growing trend has some experts believing it to be more detrimental than typical school yard bullying; because of the “24/7” access society has with the internet. (Webster, Chris, 2007). A recent studied stated that approximately half of teenagers who are either in middle school or high school have been bullied through at least one source of electronic technology.
Some disadvantages of social media are cyber bullying, harassment, and stalking. Social media can take damage and completely ruin a person’s reputation. Another major disadvantage to social media is the gps locater. Facebook now has a location tracker that shows where you are posting from. You have to go and turn off the locator function for it not to show where you are posting from.
Cyberbullying and Sexting Cyberbullying and Sexting are two technological abuses that have societal and environmental effects on students and adults today. Siegle (2010) commented, “According to an AP-MTV (2009) poll, more than 75% of 14- to 24-year-olds believe that digital abuse is a serious problem for people their age. Yet, only about half believe that what they post online could come back to hurt them” (p. 15). This in itself creates a problem, in character education because rebellious students hide behind devices instead of being accountable for their actions. The use of cell-phones, gaming and the internet is communication tools of choice for this generation.
One problem the internet caused stated in the documentary is, it is very hard for parents and authorities to regulate what kids do on the computer. Since the internet is so easy to access via new technologies, authoritative figures just cannot be present with the kids all the time. Another issue the internet has caused reported by the documentary is by it being so addictive, it has taken time away from studying, school work and activities such as reading. This is a problem because education is almost a must in today’s society. However, the documentary fails to acknowledge how the internet has helped kids by providing ways to find answers and acquire research and knowledge.
Modest Proposal Cyber bullying is an issue seen nationwide that is dangerously overlooked. Cyber bullying takes place over social networks such as Facebook and Twitter and over text messaging. Bullies are known to go after a group or person with “lower power”. There has been a rise in cyber bullying over the past few years and not nearly enough precautions are being taken to prevent this issue. Cyber bullying is legally defined as actions that use information and communication technologies to support deliberate, repeated, and hostile behavior by an individual or group that is intended to harm another or others.
Then, everyone would upset with everyone and then there will be not as good communication with other people. Net Neutrality will make every much secure social media with making people pay for the privileges. Teenagers use the internet / social media sites to manage people and their use of twitter, snapchat, facebook and watch what they say. This way people don't got suicide and kill themself . with net neutrality it would cut down on teen suicides and would limit people to online use (Rogers).
The Face book application is owned and operated by Face book Inc., which was established in September 2006. A primary advantage is that it’s an online community that we can in touch, connect, and communicate and get to know others better over time. Face book is a very important part of many teenagers’ lives, and it us keep in touch with our friends and family. The social networking site lets you post anything you want on your wall to share with the world, but sometimes people never know that what they posted is taken as an offense by others. In Lauren Tarshis, Is Face book making you mean?
Bullying can now lead to criminal cases and lawsuits. By the schools letting bullying continue it teaches students that it's ok. This creates a fearful environment instead of a learning one. Students feel "let me bully so I don't get bullied". Bullying victims can have a lot of stress added on and it can lead to retaliation such as school shootings as well as suicide.
Bullying does not just affect the victim, inadvertently; it affects everyone the victim is associated with too. Bullying should be seen as a crime because it ruins the targets chances at a normal and happy childhood, which everyone is rightfully entitled to, it destroys children’s and adolescents self-esteem, puts them into a depression, they may stop attending school which will in turn lower their grades, and it can even lead to self-harm and suicide. Usually children look forward to making friends at school and playing games with others, but if a child is bullied, they then become an outcast and slowly start reproaching socializing with society. The ones who have been bullied are usually the more subdued and quiet children. They probably do not speak in class or in a group and usually tend to avoid team sports and activities because they do not want to be chosen last.
