Often women are seen more as property and an assumption that they must be submissive and less powerful then the men in their lives comes into play and discourages them from following their dreams. Ne-Yo portrays to his audience that it is more respectable to be a leader rather than one who follows others. He, being a popular and talented performer, makes the message in this song impact his fans, especially
written by Katha Pollitt, the obvious and underlying question is whether women are morally superior to men. More specifically, Katha Pollitt brings up the idea of "difference feminism” and asking if it really takes place. "Difference feminism is known as “a woman naturally being superior to men because of their empathy, nurturance, nonhierachial relationships, and concern for equal”(http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/feminism). With "difference feminism the previous is true, rather than men being superier due to cultural and societal norms. It was very interesting to see Katha Pollit’s arguements as opposed to the other’s we read previously. I chose the quote above because it showed that women should not use their stereotypical strengths as an argument for equality.
For example, women now go out to work, just as men now help with housework and childcare. However Feminists reject the ‘March of Progress’ theory, and argue that women remain unequal within the family. Anne Oakley argues that we still live in a patriarchal (male dominated) society, and therefore women occupy a subordinate and dependant role within the family and wider society. In addition in Mary Boulton’s research backed this, she found that fewer than 20% of husbands had a majority role in childcare. Overall it could therefore be argued that rather than partners becoming more equal, women now have to carry a ‘dual burden’, whereby she is responsible for two jobs of unpaid or paid labour.
Gender stereotyping refers to the ways societies standardise their ideas about the roles and attributes of male and female . In many western cultures females were regarded as the second or inferior sex. Males were considered dominant and more important. Women were often expected to look after males. Anthony Browne in his picture book "Piggybook" questions the fairness of such attitudes and by telling and illustrating the story of the Piggott family suggests a fairer, Happier way to behave.
He also argued division of labour is based on biological differences between men and women, as women are naturally suited towards nurturing role and men to a powerful role. However Young and Willmott argue that nowadays men are taking a greater share of domestic chores. Young and Willmott identified a pattern of segregated conjugal roles in their study of traditional working class extended families. Segregated conjugal roles (identified by Elizabeth Bott) are where the couple have separate roles within the family i.e. the man is the breadwinner and the wife is the homemaker and they have separate leisure activities and spend spare time apart.
The normal characteristics that relate to femininity are softness and tenderness, prompting society to perceive a delusional falsehood that women are weak, unable to defend themselves. In a normal world it is accepted that muscular capabilities of men and beauty regimes of woman are not prone to change because these traits are usually inborn and/or developed. This avenue of thought is simply untrue. Experience has shown society that females can often match the male when it comes to living with and understanding pressure; men have fallen short when it comes to dealing with more pressure than their female counterparts. Gender roles continue to change as this is how individuals develop over a given period of time.
The conversational rituals common among women are often ways of “maintaining an appearance of equality, taking into account the effort of the exchange on the other person, using up effort to downplay the speaker’s authority so they can get the job done without flexing their muscles in an obvious way.” Women use conversational strategies to avoid appearing conceited and take another person’s feelings into account. They may seem less confident and competent than they really are. Both us men and women feel often that they aren’t getting enough credit for what they have done, not being listened to, and aren’t getting ahead as fast as they should. Every individual has his or her own style. “Women are more likely to downplay their certainty and learned as they were growing up that sounding too sure of themselves will make them unpopular.
For example, Antigone seems to be impervious toward Creon’s misogynistic ways; however, her sister, Ismene, is seen to be internalizing the idea that women are insignificant compared to men. We see the impact that this sexist culture has on Ismene when she tells Antigone, “We must remember that by birth we’re women, and, as such, we shouldn’t fight with men. Since those who rule are much more powerful, we must obey in this and in events which bring us even harsher agonies… Since I’m being compelled, I will obey those in control. That’s what I’m forced to do. It makes no sense to try to do too much” (77-85).
What is feminism? I believe that feminism is about both women and men. It confirms women’s full humanity but, it is not a putdown of men’s humanity. Rather it is a critique of patriarchy as a system that distorts the humanity and humility of both women and men. A patriarchy is defined as a system of society or government in which men hold the power and women are largely excluded from it.
Across the centuries women were repudiated entitlements equal to men and due the assembly of gender, men were given higher power above women. This has managed to disparate arguments of what is indeed the act of the woman in a gendered area and clashing for the credit of a female species (Rosenstand, 2009: 586). 3 DIFFERENCES BETWEEN SEX AND GENDER Liberal feminists squabble that both boys and girls across origin are born the alike merely the area will craft them on how ought to a man and a woman behave in a gender crafted society. Sex could be described as biological contrasts both inner and external organs. Gender could denote to communal institutionalization of sexual differences; they believed gender is utilized by those who comprehend not merely sexual inequality but far of sexual contrasts to be communal craft were by men and women are crafted to behave in precise methods that could be categorized as feminine of masculine (Okin, 1989: 116).
