Invictus Movie Report Invictus is without a doubt a very inspiring and touching movie that gives us an insight and understanding of events in South Africa before and during the Rugby World Cup in 1995 along with the dismantling of apartheid and the problems in South Africa due to apartheid and Nelson Mandela’s release from 30 years spend in prison on Robben Island. When looking at leadership it is clear that Mandela carries a unique set of leadership skills. In the movie his mission is to unite the country after all of the issues due to apartheid and he manage to get an entire nation of 43 million people to forgive each other and move on together as a united country. In the movie, the overall focus in on Mandela, but none the less, the captain of Springboks, Francois Pienaar, is also showing great skills in leadership and he manage to lead his team to winning the World Cup in the end. In the following paragraphs I will analyze the behaviour of both leaders combined with looking at their leadership competencies. When you are a leader taking charge is crucial. In the movie we see several examples on how both Mandela and Pienaar are taking charge. One of the first moves Mandela makes as the new President of South Africa is gathering all of the old administrational employees and telling them they can leave if they WANT to, but if they have fears because of their skin colour or language he is telling them, have no such fear: “The past is the past. We look to the future now. We need your help. We want your help. If you would like to stay you would be doing your country a great service. All I ask is that you do your work to the best of your abilities and with good heart. I promise to do the same.” Mandela is reaching out to the staff and use an inclusive “we” like they are together in the matter. He is being kind and honest and wants the employees to be the
