The educational requirements to become a radiologic technologist would be to complete a 2-year associate’s degree program. A person would have to attend a 4-year program and also graduate with a Bachelor’s degree. After graduating from the training program, that person would be required to take an examination to becoming licensed. Following the exam, they would be registered with The American Registry of Radiological Technologists. As result they would be able to find employment that allowed them the opportunity to be trained in multiple areas, such as CT (computed tomography) scanning and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging). After a certain period of on the job training in these other areas, this person would be able to obtain certification for both of these area. The scope of a radiologic technologist is to use their knowledge to evaluate the patient, develop the best possible radiographic techniques and evaluate resulting radiographic images to decide if additional imaging would be required. The appropriate imaging is an important part of the radiologic technologist scope of practice, but also they must know the proper positioning of the patient according to the instructions for the test to be run. The positioning of the patient determines the quality of the image as well as how much coverage can be obtained for the image. They do this while taking into account the patient's physical, emotional and mental ability and the nature of injury or disease suspected or present. As a radiologic technologist or “X-Ray tech", this person will produce films of different parts of the body to diagnose medical problems. This will prepare the patient for radiologic exams by explaining the procedure, removing jewelry, etc that can interfere with the machinery, and positioning patients so they may be properly x-rayed.
