An Individual’s Interpretation of Roles Developed In a Team An interpretation of the fundamental roles of a team consists of an initiator, researcher, executor, encourager, problem solver and polisher necessary for successful work and leisure teams. First, what is a team? According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary (2009) the definition is, “a number of persons associated together in work or activity.”[sic] Where can teams be found? The first and most common response when asked is some form of a sports team, but teams can be found everywhere. Since the beginning of time, man has lived in tribes, or clans, which can also be termed as a team. Working as a team, survival rate increased and man was able to evolve to modern man. If one does not believe in the evolution, even in the biblical scheme of things, teams can be found individuals working together with the common goal of survival. In more modern times, on a large scale, the United Nations formed in 1945, has the task of bringing the nations of the world together with the common goal of world harmony and progress, while maintaining respect for one and all (United Nations Publications, 2002). On a much smaller and more intimate setting, a family of two working to maintain a lifestyle fits the definition of a team. Educators from elementary school through university level have been making use of teams in way of assignments and experiments. I found it interesting it wasn’t until the 1990s the ‘team concept’ evolved, and an increasing number of businesses started making it a priority to work in teams to become cost effective and increase the quality of production. (Gustafson, Kim, Kleiner, Brian 1994). Many work places continue encourage working in teams, due to the efficiency and effective way problems can be solved and goals can be reached.
