The Ugly Truth My contribution to the group presentation consisted of conceptualizing one of the main characters of the movie, “The Ugly Truth”. To understand the reasoning for why Abby Richter behaves as she does, I used the “Big Five Theory” trait theory. The Big Five Theory states “Personality can be measured on five major dimensions. Each dimension represents a continuum, and every person falls somewhere on the continuum for that dimension” (Hamilton, 2007). Each of these dimensions together composes an individual’s personality. According to the Big Five Trait theory, Abby would score low on the “Openness to Experience/Intellect” scale. People who score low on this scale, as did Abby tend to be conventional, have narrow interest, and are generally uncreative. Abby demonstrated this with her very obvious objection to “The Ugly Truth” becoming a segment of her show. This character trait inherently placed an initial strain on the relationship between Abby and Mike because his views on relationships were so very different than hers, and Abby was not want this change to take place an d had it been left up to her it wouldn’t have happened. Abby was very critical of other people; especially Mike Chadway. She displayed the characteristic of being rude, harsh and callous to any guy that didn’t follow the criteria of her checklist. People who have these characteristic traits generally fall low on the “Agreeableness” spectrum. Abby was rude to Mike right away and came off very insensitive when she introduced herself to him as she reminded him of their previous phone conversation on Mike Chadway’s show. This employed yet another strain on the initial relationship between the two main characters, Abby and Mike.
