The competencies exercise revealed my top strengths to be leading, cooperating, coping with pressure, networking, taking initiative and innovating. I am someone who enjoys leading and developing others to achieve results. I can improve upon my critical thinking skills by knowing my strengths and accepting my weaknesses. This will also help with evaluating arguments in a meaningful way. When one knows their competencies they can step up and utilize their strengths and leverage others when needed.
In order to operate effectively and to achieve results there must be clear objectives, supported by clear and cooperative communication between all team members. This means clear instruction, agreement on goals and the processes you will use to achieve those goals, plus active listening and respect for other people’s point of view. Without appropriate communication team objectives will not be attained. It might take longer to gather input from all team members, than to make individual decisions, however, a good leader can facilitate effective and inclusive processes which over time and with practice, become streamlined and very efficient. Such teams can connect and coordinate across the whole organisation, improving cross-functional efficiency and
I also bring optimism, imagination and courage to the table in the face of any obstacles that might stand in my way. Interdependence is goal for me, harmonizing the rights of others with the well-being of the group. I value sensibility, following one’s heart to make prudent choices. I am tempered by rationality, and using reasoning to find the rules of life. My personal ethics lens includes my personal actions and behaviors, my core values, and responsibilities.
Assertiveness allows an individual to stand up for self, to communicate with clarity about issues, to be open and honest, to be an effective listener, to take responsibility for one’s feelings, and to engage in conflict resolution with a win-win approach. The ability to stand up for oneself is one of the benefits of developing the skill of assertiveness. An assertive person recognizes that each individual has rights and it is within that person’s rights to express his or her personal opinion. This must be done with consideration for others. When a person stands up for self he or she faces the chances of being ridiculed and being rejected however, assertiveness rises above that and it demonstrates confidence and a lack of fear for rejection.
Each person must be willing to be a part of the team, no superstar attitudes. They also recognize that there is a leader they put trust and confidence in. They trust that leader to help the team reach their goal. When differences arise they know how to quickly get past trivial issues and focus on the bigger problem. Great teams also know their strengths and weaknesses and can complement each other to achieve results and reach the goals they are going after.
What is the most important skill of effective communicators? Effective communication helps us understand better any situation and enables us to solve differences, build trust and respect. Listening is one of the most important aspects of effective communication. By learning this effective communication skill, you can better connect with coworkers and create a better work environment. The more you practice listening to your peers, team members or stakeholders, the more you realize the benefits it brings in terms of getting your message across and even convincing others when needed.
For example, geographically dispersed teams, varied functional skills, and the use of technology are elements of today’s organization. Leaders have a unique role in that requires the ability to merge these differences to form a collaborative and productive environment. When there is a disconnect with one of these variables, conflicts may ensue. How someone in one generational group approaches conflict may be diametrically opposed to someone else. Leaders have to thoroughly and continually assess working teams and identify the most effective intergenerational communication approaches for minimizing and resolving conflict.
Some of the most positive relationships that are found throughout any working environments are those in which both parties are able to learn from whom they are interacting with. In scientific terms it was a symbiotic relationship that equally benefits all parties involved. Although these relationships may be positive that is not to say that they are without their own struggles as Hoy (2004) states, “If you are a living, breathing human-being, you will have conflict.” Conflict is an inevitable part of life. What makes a relationship positive is how you are able to handle the conflict that arises in your relationships. Successful conflict-resolution is the key to any positive working relationship.
Knowing your own strengths and weaknesses and those of your employees, taking the time to know your employees is vital for a strong and cohesive team environment and will enable you to be able to bring the best out of your team because you understand their strengths and weaknesses and you know the person. Being motivated, energised, focused, positive and loving what you do is a great example to lead by and I would ensure I always acted in a manner that reflected my values and work ethic and to be fair and firm in all my dealings, that is how I would measure my performance. There is so much more though to being an effective leader and good role model; you need to be able to set clear and defined personal and work goals, plans and activities that reflect the plans of your business and your own responsibilities and accountabilities. To measure my personal performance I would set performance based goals rather than goals based on outcome because with performance based goals you have control over how and when you achieve them and satisfaction when you do complete them. Self-respect and self-acceptance also play a vital role in self-concept as it enables us to tweak our behavior to suit different situations. Positive
