Interpersonal Conflict Style Essay Ajitpaul Gill Interpersonal Conflict occurs in any setting where two or more people must work together, such as corporations, marriages and friendships. There are five interpersonal conflict styles which are, Forcing, Collaborating, Compromising, Avoiding and Accommodating. The style you choose can affect the resolution of conflict, as well as the willingness of participants to work together. Personally for me, my conflict style would be collaborating. Collaborating is when you cooperate with the other party to understand their concerns and expressing your own concerns in an effort to find a mutually and completely satisfactory solution. The main goal for this conflict style is to find and integrative solution when both sets of concerns are too important to be compromised and to work through hard feelings which have been interfering with and interpersonal relationship so you can get a win/win situation. There are tactics used in all the interpersonal conflict styles. When collaborating, I try to use tactics to help me, for example first I have to try and purse the common goal. I define the mutual problem with the other party, being open and honest is really important and I also use 3rd parties for their problem-solving skills. Individuals who fit into this style are self-motivating, expressive, enjoy the atmosphere of peer relationships and value independence. I would have to say that collaboration is one of the most beneficial interpersonal conflict styles. The process itself is based on mutual trust, respect and participation, which can be mutually rewarding. When several parties collaborate to resolve a conflict, they openly express their concerns and work to find a mutually beneficial solution. The outcome relationship is improved by the development of trust between the parties. But most importantly it satisfies all
