“Internet censorship is the control or suppression of the publishing of, or access to information on the Internet. It may be carried out by governments or by private organizations either at the behest of government or on their own initiative. Individuals and organizations may engage in self-censorship on their own or due to intimidation and fear.” That was a quote from Wikipedia. And honestly, despite its reputation for being easily filled with useless information, that statement doesn’t really seem all that far off. The problem and issue of the internet being blocked goes back quite a few years. Previously, the internet filter worked by looking up a word on the internet using a search engine, and then blocking next to all the websites that seemed to have in-appropriate content. Unfortunately, because this had to be done manually, some websites were un-necessarily blocked such as: Shakespeare’s plays, the declaration of independence, a brochure about the dangers of marijuana and several articles of the book “Moby-Dick”. You could probably guess why the last one was blocked. Years later, DET tried to improve the filtering of websites by putting down categories and marking websites by how they should be banned. Some of these topics include newsgroups, entertainment, blogs/personal information, education and uncategorised. That’s right, education and uncategorised. A website called Andrew tech help was blocked and their justification was that it was uncategorised. And trailing behind of that was an article on Wikipedia about bug type classifications that is blocked in the category of education. And finally, a website was also blocked because DET allowed HSC and TAFE studies. Some of these, actually nearly all of these categories don’t even make sense, and should seriously be reconsidered.
