Last night, Thurgood Marshall junior Brianna Green attended a banquet in Columbus as one of 28 honorees, 15 of them high school students, in this year’s Ohio Statewide Laws for Life Essay Contest. The competition is sponsored by the Better Business Bureau and coordinated by Ohio Partners in Character Education. Green was the only finalist from Montgomery County. “The essay contest was at the end of last school year,” said Patricia Day, her sophomore year English teacher. “I read the essays over the summer and submitted hers.” Day, a past supervisor of social studies for DPS, had another student winner in the competition, which began in 2001.

As you know, Middle School students receive letter grades at the end of each semester. The end of our third quarter is a good time to think about how your student is meeting the goals outlined in the grading scale. He then moved with his grandmother and two sisters to Los Angeles. Bunche was forced to take on several odd-jobs to help shoulder some of the family’s financial burden. His intellect was apparent at a young age. In elementary school, he received awards in history and English, and graduated as the valedictorian of his high school class. Bunche was also a star debater and athlete in high school.
Greek organizations are also a big part of the on-campus activities at Western Kentucky University. In 1961 the first national fraternities and sororities were allowed to make local chapters at the local university. At this moment there are 31 active organizations with about 1500 participants each year. As students enter their college years at Western Kentucky University they find that there are many opportunities at this great school. The school holds what they call The Multiple Intelligences Festival, this festival has been held every year for the last four years. Jan Cox, the school principal, states that “We bring in a lot of different people with a lot of different talents so the children can experience that,”They begin to understand that they have different talents and they see adults with different talents and it broadens their idea of what they can do when they grow up.” (Castillo, 2008) In the hallways and classrooms of the school are hands on exhibits where the students experience the talents hands on.
