When preparing for an international business trip a person must be handle new and unfamiliar cultural differences. There are many ways that culture can influence a business trip. One must always remember to respect and understand the new culture. One must be able to do this by not forcing their beliefs on people. Research is essential when traveling to another country to handle business. There are many actions that Americans take for granted. For an example looking a superior in the eye, may be considered rude. American business meetings are all business. In other countries one can be considered disrespectful if they don’t ask about their family and health before discussing business matters. When researching the Chileans culture, manners, customs, values, and etiquettes I found that their business practices are quite similar. Professional appearances are very important to Chilean business people. Men are expected to dress in suit and tie where as women are to dress in a discreet business suit. Men wear their jackets at all times even if they leave the office for lunch. Chileans tend to start their business day around 9 a.m. and ends usually between 6 and 7p.m. Longer lunch breaks are not uncommon lasting up to two or even three hours if business needs to be conducted. Business meetings always begin at the indicated time, unlike their social occasions. Business meetings are not to be rushed. It is imperative to be courteous and not to rush a business deal. Business deals that are rushed most likely won’t be successful. One should always wait for the other party to change the topic. Being patient is essential; in Chile time is not of the essence. A business meeting will last as long as needed. It is important to pay attention their hand movements, many gestures change meaning as it common to interrupt someone while they are speaking in
