Jasmin Ortiz Sept 5, 2010 Integrity & Academic Honesty in Technology Usage Jasmin Ortiz Integrity is the “adherence to moral and ethical principles; soundness of moral character; honesty.” (Dictionary.com2010) Integrity is basically being honest and having morals. One of my coaches from high school used to tell us integrity is “doing what is right, even when no one is looking.” (Carreon2009) Integrity and academic honesty in life are very important just as they are in academics and technology usage. Our textbook talks about 4 different components that deal with technological and academic and healthcare honesty. It goes over privacy, confidentiality, security and Integrity. Privacy is basically where a person wants to keep their personal information private. In healthcare this can refer to keeping things such as a patient’s medical records private with the patient confidentiality law. This law provides patients the right to keep their medical and private information private. Confidentiality is the responsibility of the healthcare provider. He or she is to limit the information’s accessibility in order to benefit the patient. (Joos2010) With technology there are many ways that you can keep personal information private. Creating passwords that only you know is a good way to keep information private. Be careful about who and how you give out your information. Security is the way that you try to keep information private. You need security in academics and in healthcare. “The two main types of threats are those to the integrity of data and the confidentiality of the data.” (Joos2010) Academic honesty means having integrity and not copying other people’s ideas. This means not plagiarizing, or stealing someone else’s thoughts or ideas. Technology makes it easy for people to plagiarize, whether they
