Rushil Patel 9 November 2012 Mr. Glackin, Period 11 Integration of Technology Technology has become an inescapable part of daily life. Humans have become dependent on technology because it makes living much easier and helps facilitate daily activities. The book The Nature of Technology by W. Brian Arthur explains what technology is, why it is necessary, and much more. Technology has three definitions according to Arthur. The first and most basic is that a “technology is a means to fulfill a human purpose” (Arthur, 28). Tools were one of the first technologies. From rocks to hammers is one example of an innovation of technology. This fulfills a human purpose and is one instance of how someone did not even realize they were using a technology. Wheels, levers, and pulleys were early technologies and today they are used everywhere. Society has been immersed in technological innovations and has become dependent on them. Without electricity, life would be so much more difficult. With busy and demanding lives, technology and electricity is a must. Knowing that “novel technologies are shaped by social needs” (Arthur, 108), technologies such as phones, televisions, radios, cars, and computers cannot be avoided if humans want to keep up with this quick modern world and therefore, fulfilling human needs. One recent example of a human dependency for technology is when Hurricane Sandy struck New Jersey and power was out for millions. Hundreds of schools and businesses were closed for days and communication was very limited. The second definition states: “technology has an assemblage of practices and components” (Arthur, 28).
