Kamala Markandaya was born in 1924 in Mysore in a well orthodox family. Her father was a business man. Every time he has to get transfer from one place to another. So, she didn’t get a continuous flow in her education. There was one good thing about this that it helped Marakandaya in becoming a good observer. She got a chance of observing people from a very close angel because of these transfers and we can see the reflection of her observations in her novels. Her writings were very realistic. She took admission in Chennai University for graduation but on the other hand she started writing also. She left her graduation in the mid and started working in a newspaper office where there was not an expression of improvement and she was paid very less. So, she decided to leave that job. With the help of her father she started writing short stories, novels for the newspaper. On the other hand she completed her graduation. She was a carrier oriented woman. So, she wants to establish herself as a famous writer. Her family started asking her for marriage but she refused. She then landed to England and worked there as a proof reader just to manage to earn a living for herself. She married to John Taylor, a business man. Her husband financed her writing with his help she started writing and her first novel was Nectar in a Sieve (1954) which got a national award. This narrator focuses on the story of one woman living in poverty in rural India during a time of great change. Though the book meticulously avoids specifics about the time and place of the story, some context clues give us a sense that how marriage plays an important role in one’s life. Rukmani the protagonist of the story was born to the village headman she is spoiled by her social station in the village. When she is twelve and ready to become a bride, she expects a grand wedding like her older sisters enjoyed.
