The story “Insignificant Gestures” is a short story written in 2007 by Jo Cannon. The story is about a doctor who has returned home from Africa where he had been stationed. The doctor is telling a story about a incident that changed his life forever. The story is told in past tense and it is composed of a flashback. The themes in the story are love and helping other people in need. The story is written in a first person perspective. The narrator is a doctor who has been stationed in Africa to work as a health officer in the local hospital in town. He has just returned home to retrain as a psychiatrist. He cannot manage to see any more dead people. “I never wanted to smell blood again. Or the sweet nail-varnish odour of starvation. Or any other reek of human suffering. I couldn’t bear to witness another death”, (Page 1 line 1-3). This statement indicates that his soul is wounded. In Africa the narrator is portrayed as wealthy and talented. He was “…district health officer, at the absurdly young age of twenty-eight”, (page 1 line 27). To begin with he does not understand how the African society is compound. He does not need a servant but a colleague tells him that he is committed to help with his amount of money, because Celia's family depends on her. He decides to keep Celia as his servant. This turns out to be an advantageous decision, not only to Celia but also to him. As Celia starts to draw with him every evening she lights up his life in his meaningless life. That is also why he gets hurts when suddenly she is his patient, and it turns out that he
