Information Technology and how it’s changed our life in C21st A few months ago, I was holding my iPhone and busy uploading pictures to Facebook while watching the Olympic Gymnastics final at the North Greenwich Arena in London. I shared my every exciting moment with family and friends over the internet in real-time. I was very lucky to get my tickets by applying online and witnessed the world’s biggest sports event. Although I’m living in southeast, and it was my first time visiting the venue, it wasn’t difficult for me to make the journey at all. Thanks to modern IT (Information Technology), I was able to retrieve information such as the travel route and the event timetable over my iPhone at anytime and anywhere. Not to mention that my satnav even notified me when there was a traffic accident ahead and automatically re-routed me. IT has improved my life so much that I cannot imagine a life without it. IT also helps us to balance our work and life and we don’t have to physically meet people to communicate with them anymore. For example, I am someone who works from home with an online shop yet my customers are from all around the world, and I have an employee in China who dispatches the products I sell. It may sound crazy but I’ve never actually met with my employee in the flesh and we communicate through the internet most of the time. This is something I could never have imagined in C20th. The amount of information at our fingertips now is enormous. As human beings, we are simply not able to remember everything. Through IT, we can store the sum of human knowledge outside of our brains and access this information anytime and anyplace. Indeed in 2011 an article in the journal, Science, calculated that the entire world’s stored data had exceeded 250 exabytes (that’s the equivalent of 5 trillion 200 page books!).
