Information Gathering Interview Assignment Objective: This assignment is designed to help you obtain career information and to enhance your competence in interviewing. A secondary purpose of this assignment is to provide you with an opportunity to network and build relationships with others in your chosen industry. Most jobs are obtained because of “WHO YOU KNOW” after all! Description: You will conduct a 20 - 30 minute information-gathering interview (see chapter 7) of a professional in your field of career interest. You will be the interviewer. CAUTION: You should NOT use this interview to seek employment or a promotion. You are simply seeking knowledge about a career you might be interested in. You will turn in: ----- A log of all activities connected with this assignment: all correspondence, phone calls, personal contacts, etc. ----- A preliminary plan for the interview including your general and specific purposes ----- An outline to use as a script during the interview. - Explain your interview strategy, and include your plan for the opening, body and closing of your interview (be specific). - In the body of the interview, arrange your questions under two or three topics you wish to ask about. Compose several primary questions for each topic as well as some follow-up questions for each primary question in case the interviewee doesn’t give you as much information as you’d like. Label each question as open or closed and what type of question it is. ----- A discussion summarizing what you learned. Include a heading for each of the topics you investigated, and a brief summary of what you learned about that topic. ------Analysis Section Add a final heading under which you describe what you learned about the interviewing process. - Clarify your learning process in depth, explaining what you
