Power is defined as “the ability to make choices or influence outcomes, which is also power held by a person or group of people in a society”. Nowhere in the definition of power does corruption come into question. So where has this idea come from? Well first we have to look at what power is made up of. Who wants power and why do they want it? The quest for power stems from the deadliest human flaws. Those being greed, lust, envy, pride, and fear; this makeup can be compared to the 7 deadly sins, the most fatal mistakes we can make as humans. Power is a flaw that is the acclimation of some of our deepest, darkest faults. It is evil, and unfortunately it is something that deep down all of us human beings crave. “Do not overrate what you have received, nor envy others. He who envies others does not obtain peace of mind.” (Buddha) Envy is an insatiable desire; People who are envious resent another person that has something they perceive themselves as lacking, and wish the other person to be deprived of it. Looks at envy in the form of a deadly sin people who are envious are punished because they have gained sinful pleasure from seeing others misfortune. Power smiles upon those who obtain it and will cast aside and use those who do not, people in the quest for absolute power will rip people down and stomp on them, to stop them from being a threat to their power. This notion of tearing down those who have power and keeping them down leads into the next trait of power; fear. Thus fear is an emotion experienced in anticipation of some specific pain or danger. This trait does not rear it ugly head until those who wanted power have obtained it. Once one has obtained power, holding on to it becomes the driving force behind all decisions.
