At the beginning of the film there was a part of the documentary where young boys were defined as being manly: being tough, powerful, athletic, muscular, and rude. If you did not fit into this category then the names that you were associated with were: wimp, fag, chicken and sissy. ..etc. The family, community and society have a huge part in teaching the kids to be this way, but the biggest influence is found in the media, specially television. For example, kids view Latinos or Mexicans as boxers and Asians as martial artists or even as criminals.
This quote was saying that whenever something significant had happened, politically speaking, there would be an outbreak of “The Crucible” books being produced. People would read on what might happen and interpret it to their situation. Whenever a sudden and violent political action is about to take place, “The Crucible” becomes even more famous, with different situations comes different interpretations. Quote Two: “For some, the play seems to be about the dilemma of relying on the testimony of small children accusing adults of sexual abuse, something I'd not have dreamed of forty years ago. For others, it may simply be a fascination with the outbreak of paranoia that suffuses the play—the blind panic that, in our age, often seems to sit at the dim edges of consciousness.
The Hunger Games serves as an allegory for modern entertainment, economics, and government to criticize on society’s entertainment in violence and how it can provoke violence in society, government’s control by creating fear and weapons, and a criticism on the gap between the rich and the poor which creates a hostile relationship between first and third world countries and these ideas demonstrate that society is corrupt and young people are the only ones that can change it. In today’s society, people find entertainment in violence which can ultimately stimulate violence in society. Teenagers find entertainment in violent video games which can lead to acts of violence. About 97% of teenagers play games that contain little to no violence, sex, and drugs, and studies have shown that in some cases video games can cause teens to become violent and aggressive (Harvard’s) In The Hunger Games, The Capitol finds an immense entertainment in violence. The actual games make young adults in the novel become inhumane and violent in order to survive.
Society seems to be less moral and elegance today, being celebrity had some class to it, and now it does not. Music has gone down the drain, with song degrading women, celebrities, and minorities. They make songs with a catchy beat and people just go along with it. As well as television, there was a time where even cartoon taught a lesson about current issues. Television shows like the cartoon “Static Shock” taught its young viewers about things like peer pressure and gangs.
In the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton there are two groups that could both be considered menaces to society. The Socs are more of a menace to society. Some say however, that the Greasers are more of a menace to society because of the way they look. The Socs are more of a menace to society because they make unprivileged peoples life distressing and hurt the Greasers both physically and mentally.
Television: A Distortion of Reality Television has become a false reality for millions of Americans and the majority of the global society. “The use of television to promote primarily materialistic values has become a severe, although largely unacknowledged, mental health and public health problem for the United States and the world” (Elgin 105). Duane Elgin speaks about the impact of television on the youth of our nation and how it is “being used to promote mindless consumerism around the planet” (Elgin 104). The negative effects of television are clear, and the reality is that this communication device is changing the important values of the global youth. The lucid shift in values has been from developing a meaningful philosophy in life to being well-off financially.
In addition, this sort of disrespect and violence towards women is unfortunately seen on TV, making it accessible for children and teenagers of today to be exposed to this sort of violence. This can affect the behavior of a child who is used to learning from what they see on TV as well as grow up with the idea that this sort of treatment towards women is normal. Rivers says, “American teenagers have instant access, in their living rooms, to the messages of rock, on the same vehicle that brought them ‘Sesame Street’. Who can blame them if they believe that the images they see
Sociology-101 September 22, 2009 Rap Music has a Negative Impact on Young Adults Introduction: Rap music has become one of the most popular genres for young adults. I chose this topic to research because I think that rap music is very influential and causes a negative effect in the young adults’ life. When listening to rap songs, a lot of times an individual will hear many different negative references ranging from, implications that women are not equal to men and that money is everything, to rapping about sex and drugs like they are common everyday activities. People, young adults especially, are very vulnerable when it comes to suggestions, whether they are positive or negative. If someone constantly tells a teenager to steal a candy bar, most likely that teenager will eventually steal the candy bar.
The impact that the media in the United States has on the minds of the youth has changed into an increasingly dangerous issue. While the media has many positive influences there are still yet many negative behaviors exercised by many teenagers and young adults. Amongst these behaviors is the acceptance of how sex is ok amongst teenagers. The media has become a pool of promiscuity which has led to the spread of many STD’s including HIV and AIDS. This essay describes how the media has led to the rise in promiscuity and thus leading to the continuous growth of the HIV Pandemic giving other countries a reason to believe that the people in the United States have poor cultural values.
The media largely influences every child and teens views and judgment. So now, if children and teens are learning sexist views, most of them would be getting them from the media. Media includes everything from the music world, to what is on TV every night, to what models wear on the runway, to what the latest gossip is on the gossip magazines. Almost everything in the media defies women as an object rather then an equal to men- especially the music world. The lyrics of a lot of rap song are so sexist, they mention hurting, beating, slapping and even killing women.
