It is thought that it is the behaviour of a few ‘sick’ or disturbed individuals, but in actual fact Domestic Violence is far too widespread to be the work of just a few individuals. A minority pattern is that men are abused by women in some cases; official statistics say that 1 in 7 men are abused at some point in their lives by a woman, and 1 in 20 men experience it repeatedly. Another pattern is 1% of Domestic Violence cases are committed by women on another woman. Mirrlees - Black’s (1999) survey of 16,000 people estimates that there are 6.6 million Domestic assaults a year, about half of those involving physical injury. Domestic Violence is not random but follows particular social patterns and these patterns have social causes.
Anna was drowning in the misery of her marriage and in guilt from seeing another man on one side but is happy to be with Gurov. Anna states that, “for years now they had not been comfortable together, in their intimacy and at a distance… It was something they might have known once” (Oates 449), which explains that her unhappy marriage forced her to search for a person to fulfill the lost emotions at home. Committing adultery is more of an emotional fulfillment that it is a physical need but it derives from the want to find someone who means something more. If couple who married shows that they do not love each other mutually, it should be acceptable for the two to be involved in an affair because neither of them truly gets hurt, providing act of cheating to be meaningless and
Women during this time were only allowed to go so far and do so much without being restrained it seemed like. She doubts herself in letters she sends to her female friends who sympathize with her problems in choosing her partner for marriage. As a result to her resent of her thoughts about female powerlessness, and her outspoken thoughts of marriage. Virtue also resulted in achievement of morality, which was identified with marriage. Also Eliza resisted the sexual double-standard which I found really amazing.
In the book both sisters had to deal with their spouse cheating on them but they both just wanted revenge on their husband and boyfriend at first but that wasn’t the right way to go about it. One of my favorite lines in the book is in the chapter where the spiritual counselors tell Vanessa and Thomas that just because god says its okay to divorce and adulterer doesn’t mean you should. I think that in this day and age, we are so quick to throw in the towel and sometimes god really wants us to look at the “for better or for worse” part. I think that if your husband or wife was to make a mistake we shouldn’t be so quick to get a divorce and try to work things out. This book taught me that divorce isn’t the way to solve your problems all though time.
Ridgway growing up around this society developed him into a man who undervalued women and also felt to gain power after living a very broken-childhood, which is why violence upon women was his escape to accomplish a sense of authority. During the time in-between 1982 to 2001, Ridgway had only been arrested twice, with many killings of other women that had gone unheard of. The social institutions did not fulfill the needs of a stable society. In 2001, that is when Ridgway had been arrested on the suspicion of murdering four women 19 years after in

What happens when society demands are not in line with what an individual desires? When an individual and society demands are different people are put in difficult situation sometimes making someone suffer the consequences. In the short stories “The Love Suicides at Amijima” and “The Punishment” it shows during time how society demands for women and individuals desires such as marriage, make women make irrational decisions. In “The Love Suicides of Amijima” Osan is married to her cousin Jihei; they have two kids together. Through out the story we observe how Jihei is having an affair with a prostitute name Koharu.
According to the author Deborah Tannen the article, Sex, Lies, and conversation" is about how differently men and women percieve conversation in their relationship. She states that lack of conversation is wreaking havoc within marriages. this is due to the fact that men and women have very different expectations of communication. Tannen describes how differences in communication start in the childhood socialization. For young girls, conversation is the cornerstone of friendship.
The results, however, are largely inconclusive as many other causes that are not easily isolated, such as ethnicity and health, are involved when comparing homosexuals with heterosexuals and determining economic discrimination. “Homophobia” is a term describing the irrational attitudes of hate and loathing felt toward homosexual people. Within the past thirty years, this word has spawned a more blatant and more profound discrimination toward this group of people with sexual preferences challenging the norm. In fact, recent studies have unveiled that more than 30% of gay youth have been threatened or injured because of their lifestyles. Hate crimes, such as the 1993 Brandon Teena slaying, remain prevalent (Burns, 2007).
Studies about men and women, boys, and girls who have been involved in prostitution and/or pornography have revealed a lot. They are the hardest patients to treat. They say they want help, but nothing thatþs done to help them out works. They run back. They just donþt seem to want to change.
