Increasing Demand of Land Supply

Besides meeting the need of increasing demand of land supply in urban areas where population density is high, we also need to maximize agricultural landuse to enable farmers getting more land to grow more food crops to feed the increasing population. Maximizing landuse can be done through terracing, creating flat strips of land by cutting a series of steps into hill slopes. This increases the supply of arable land as flat land is better for cultivation of crops. Terraces are often water-logged due to collection water by the bunds, making it suitable for cultivating paddy-rice. Terracing is an inexpensive way to increase land supply compared to other ways such as land reclamation but it is hard to construct and need a lot of human energy and time to cut steps into hills or maintain after construction. In China, Yunnan province, people build the Hani terrace which successfully turned hilly areas to arable land, maximizing agricultural land use and it even boosts up the rice production of that area. Terraces do not cause as much environmental impact as land reclamation or land clearance, moreover, it even helps to prevent soil from being washed away and protect the soil layers. Terrace construction is often accompanied with irrigation system, watering of crops through artificial means, thus enable farmers to grow crops in areas that experience water shortage hence increase supply of arable land. The irrigation system is so powerful that it promotes desert agriculture. In Israel, a country which more than half of the territory is dessert is able to grow banana in desert, and it helps to improve the whole country’s economy. Computerized irrigation water plant efficiently, reducing human labor but sometimes the system maybe expensive to construct and make it more feasible to middle east countries but not LDCs. Although maximizing agricultural landuse can be environmental
