Gerry Conlon as well as three others known as the “Guildford Four” were arrested, tortured and threatened for their written confession. They were charged and eventually convicted for the bombing of a pub in Guilford, England in 1974. Gerry’s father, Giuseppe Conlon along with six others were also sent to prison for the alleged possession of explosive materials and their support of IRA terrorists. Father and son spend the next fifteen years together in prison; Giuseppe maintains their innocence and fights for their release, while Gerry wrestles the demons of injustice along with the harsh realities of prison life. Only after his father’s health starts to rapidly decline, does Gerry finally start to work with his father to clear their names. With the help of a British lawyer he along with all the others falsely charged are released, after documents surface that the police withheld information that proved their innocence. The movies end with Gerry Conlon vowing that he will not stop until his father (who died in prison) name is cleared of all wrong doing. 7) Analyze the social and philosophical issues the film addresses. The social and philosophical issues are immense considering that this movie is based on actual events. The bombings had struck deeply into the British’s people’s sense of safety.
