He considers carrying things through the streets undignified, and refuses to do it himself. On Christmas morning, Malachy and Frank attend Mass with their father and go to collect leftover coal strewn over the Dock Road so that their mother can cook the pig’s head. Pa Keating meets the boys on the street and convinces the landlord of South’s pub to give them a bag of real coal. They drag the coal home through the rain, passing cozy houses. Children laugh at them from inside the houses, taunting them and calling them “Zulus” because they are smeared with black coal.
When she arrives back at the caravan she lives in with her dad, he is incredibly shocked to hear his daughter begging him to let her keep a skinny, stinky, ugly stray, and he says a firm no. The city of New York turns a blind eye to the poorest children every day and there are many reasons for this, including neo-liberalism and racism. To begin, Kozol goes onto illustrate the blindness and disregard that these people, especially children, face every day. A disturbing fact that was relayed in the book was that all of the dirty sites, such as garbage dumps and waste incinerators were placed in the South Bronx because wealthier people did not want to have these facilities around their property, “This waste incinerator burns red-bag products, such as amputated limbs and fetal tissue, bedding, bandages and syringes that are transported here from 14 New York City hospitals. The waste products of these hospitals were initially going to be burned at an incinerator scheduled to be built along the East Side of Manhattan, but the siting of a burner there had been successfully resisted by the parents of the area because of the fear of cancer risks to children,” (Kozol, 1997, 7).

There is a clear division line separating the north and south which displays the difference in development level of nations. The north is predominantly more developed than the south, with massively wealthy nations like the America; consequently there is less poverty in the north and people generally have a higher standard of living. In comparison, the south is dominated by poor countries which have low levels of development. Most of the people in the south have a lower standard of living due to high poverty rates; however there are some exceptions to this trend like Australia. Evidently there is an unequal relationship between the north and south, which could be mainly due to the fact many of the southern countries were owned by the north in the past.

We have to consider that Detroit has reported more population than Chicago. Cities that have large populations also have a greater chance of crimes being committed. People losing their jobs and many their homes could contribute to the economy status. This could contribute to the increasing numbers. Looking at what could help the numbers decrease could be because repeat offenders are receiving harsher punishments, or companies increasing their security with newer technology.

The death of family members left the children facing pain at an early age. Parents even went as far as to abandoning their children, leaving them on the streets to fend for themselves. They didn’t want to risk their babies giving them the deadly disease. Children were especially unlucky if they were girls.
