Important Issues Today

John F Smith The following are the social issues that I find most pressing. They are not necessarily the most important, I believe all social issues are quite important in their own ways, but the following have hit home with me for different reasons and experiences I have had throughout my life. Pollution The problem of pollution is a global problem, but I would like to focus on our major cities. I believe in our major cities pollution should be considered a major social issue because the common mindset seems to be quite apathetic toward the environment. This is exacerbated by the ‘hustle-bustle’ of the big cities and people convince themselves that they are just too busy to find a garbage can. Pollution is still an issue in our suburbs, where on any given weekend night you can spot multiple cars packed with hungry high-schoolers spewing their fast food trash out the windows of their cars and onto our highways, ultimately not only aesthetically hurting our living area, but also contributing to larger scale environmental problems. The pollutants that major corporations spew about our cities are also a major problem, but shifting our social and moral priority of this problem on an individual scale should lead to increased pressure on big business. The only reason these corporations can take advantage of our environment is because the public supports them. It is our choice what products to buy, and an educated consumer is one of the most positive forces in environmental change. This leads me to my next issue; Endangered species / Management of fisheries Endangered species are a global problem. For anyone who has ever taken an Ecology course it is easy to see that there are countless intertwined ecological relationships in the world’s ecosystems. Losing any species to extinction can have far-reaching implications that even our best ecological minds
