Importance of Equality and Diversity

Martin Luther king jr(1965) said ,”Discrimination is a hellhound that gnaws at Negroes in every waking moment of their lives to remind them that the lie of their inferiority is accepted as truth in the society dominating them”. When people are treated according to their merits and not discriminated upon because of the colour of their skin, age, gender, sexuality, disability, class, religion or other factors which do not necessarily affect their abilities, it gives room for them to be able to fit in, grow, achieve their goals and also contribute positively to the society. As individuals, an institution or community, it is crucial that we understand the concept of equality and diversity, its importance, how it is implemented into institutions not forgetting the consequences of not practicing it. Equality and diversity as a phrase can be seen as the act of treating everyone equally on their merit, it can also be understood as treating people differently in other to treat them the same. Discrimination can either be direct or indirect, “direct discrimination occurs when it is obvious that a person is treated unfavourably because of their age, sex, religion or any other reason whereas indirect discrimination occurs when a policy appears to deals with all people equally but the result affects a number of certain people where the requirement is un favourable”(university of Wolverhampton) for example, if an institution says that for any student to be able to take a student loan he or she must have a bank account in the country which has been active for at least five years, this kind of policy might appear to deal what all students equality but in the real sense it discriminates against some international students who have not be in the country for up to five years The importance of equality and diversity to humanity cannot be over emphasized .equality and
