Importance of Cleanliness in Islam

The topic that i have chosen today is the importance of cleanliness in Islam. Cleanliness and purification is one of the great privileges of Islam. Cleanliness is an essential part of Islamic life and in fact the meaning and spirit behind the concept of cleanliness is much beyond the superficial concept of the conventional cleanliness. In the Holy Quran, Allah says: "Truly, Allah loves those who turn to Him constantly and He loves those who keep themselves pure and clean." (Al Baqarah 2:222) My dear sisters, Islam teaches us that there are two kinds of cleanliness; physical and spiritual. As far as physical cleanliness is concerned, it is of two types. One which is related to human body and the other is related to environment, water, house, road and public places. Islam places great emphasis on cleanliness of our body. As we all know that praying five times a day is obligatory for all Muslims. There are seven pre-requisites of Prayers. Without all these, Prayer is not valid. These are the essentials of Prayers', and hence obligatory . Three of them are about cleanliness, which are Cleanliness of the body; Cleanliness of the clothes; and Cleanliness of the place (where Prayer is being offered); To clean our body parts before paryers Allah has made it obligatory for all muslims to do ablution before prayers. the Prophet (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) said: ¬ “Behold, if there is a river in front of a man’s door, in which he bathes five times daily, could dirtiness remain (on his body)” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim). Moreover the Holy prophet(pbuh) said: “Cleanliness is half the faith” (Muslim) Dear sisters, On the Day of Judgment, members of the nation of Muhammad (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) will be distinguished by the light in their faces and legs owing to the performance of ablution.
