Media in communication describes tools used to store and deliver information or data. There are various types of media in our society today. Examples include, mass media, broadcast media, advertising media, electronic media, multimedia and digital media. Television, radio, newspapers, and the internet are collective media channels. The Roman Catholic Church, was the first to develop a reliable means of communication network in the early twelfth century. With the development of printing in the mid-fifteen century it became possible for books and other publications to be mass produced for the first time, leading to numerous cultural changes. Books, magazines, newspapers, and other printed forms of information and knowledge became readily available and accessible to a lot more people in various forms. Early forms of writing first appeared in the Middle East about 3500 BC. Over the next 2,000 years, writing evolved from simple pictographs to highly developed ideograms and the sound-based alphabet system. Modern rag-based paper was developed in China between 240 BC and105 BC. In medieval Western Europe early hand-copied books were created primarily by monks and other religious figures. Because they were difficult to produce, these books were expensive and rare. (Ralph E. Hanson, Sage publication) Different types of media exist today. For the scope of this work we will limit ourselves to one media type, mass media that covers all outlets of media. Mass media is a media intended for large audiences. It may take the form of broadcast media, as in the case of television and radio, or print media, like newspapers and magazines. Internet media also has mass media status, and many media outlets maintain a web presence to take advantage of the ready availability of Internet in many regions of the world.
