Just like children abused by their parents that in fact grow up to be abusive themselves. Kass says that children of divorce “have had no successful models to imitate” (229) and in fact “enter into relationships guardedly and tentatively” (230). Children of divorce enter a relationship looking for red flags up front and when things get difficult they never had anything in which to compare their situation. “When the going gets tough, the tough gets going;”…LITERALLY! Divorce is tragic on many levels and all too often the impact on children is more then just the shock of their parents living in two different places.
Taking Sides: Divorce Affecting Children’s Development In today’s society, divorce is becoming a prevalent issue that plagues the traditional family. More and more couples are turning to divorce as the answer to their marital conflicts. But while divorce may be the answer for the parent’s contention, many researchers are claiming divorce may not be the best solution for children. One such researcher, Karl Zinsmeister, wrote an article in The American Enterprise entitled, “Divorce’s Toll on Children,” in which he expounds on the negative impact that divorce has on today’s children. The purpose of this paper is to critique Zinsmeister’s article, and explore its potential flaws and strengths.
The Affects of Divorce Among Black College Students Divorce is the legal and final dissolution of a marriage. There are a variety of reasons why people make the decision to divorce. Therapists mention problems with couples growing apart, feeling unloved and unappreciated, and troubles with finances as the top reasons for divorce. Divorce is something that affects most Americans directly or indirectly. Children are affected by the divorce more if the parents have custody hearings or move away from each other.
In many divorce cases children are involved. Almost all divorcing parents try to keep the children out of it, but it is nearly impossible to avoid involving the children. Divorce greatly increases many types of bad effects on the children involved in the divorce, including psychological problems, juvenile delinquency, suicide, undereducation, and teenage pregnancies. Problems arise from conflict during and after divorce more than from conflict during the marriage. There is an increased incidence of emotional and physical damage even if the divorce is low-conflict.
Abigail's shrewd behavior is most likely from growing up an orphan and never acquiring a parent's unconditional love. According to the online article The Effects of Parents on a Child's Psychological Development a child who receives minimal love from a parent are more likely to develop into an adult with lower self-worth, feelings of inadequacy, limiting beliefs and insecurity which can result in suspicion and jealousy in relationships. Although Abigail was taken in by her Uncle he was far too interested in the way he was perceived by the community to care about Abigail at all "…now when some good respect is rising for me in the parish, you compromise my very character. I have given you a home, child, I have put clothes upon your back…" The absence of a parent figure in Abigail's life have made it oblige to look after herself when something has gone awry. In the midst of taking care of herself Abigail had an affair with John Proctor who gave her a sense of security and belonging which she wasn't able to receive from Reverend Parris.
Sonja is not satisfied with the dispassionate marriage she is having with Leon as she describes it as merely “going through the motion”. She also suspects Leon of having extramarital affair and once Leon confesses his “one night stand that happened twice” their marriage breaks. However, because Leon hardly tries to communicate with his wife about his inner feelings and thoughts, it is this rare courage of honesty and his latter efforts that save his marriage. Honesty also acts as a tool that penetrates their respective emotional walls that are set private to each other. After
The prenatal Cash was a part of her, someone inside of her from whom she could never isolate herself. In the reluctant mother’s mind, Anse Bundren was to blame for corrupting her sense of privacy and would be forever dead to her. In this way, she severed what was supposed to be the most sovereign relationship in a woman’s life and created a rift through what was to come of the Bundren family. As the family grows, Addie develops misconceptions about her relationship to her children. Cash had violated her aloneness, while Darl was deprived of the love that Addie poured so strongly into the void that was her third son.
Their relationships with their family are badly compromised because this disorder causes teens to make no efforts to hide their behaviour, and they are not concerned with the feelings of others. They are most likely to not do well at school and not attend school regularly. What are the causes contributing to Conduct Disorder? This disorder is most commonly found amongst adolescents with troubled past experiences (mainly child abuse) and family issues, which can include parents with drug and/or alcohol addictions and family conflicts. It can also be caused by genetic defects and often arise out of situations of poverty.
