My theme investigation looks into a variety of aspects on the impact mankind has made to the earth’s environment. The texts I had studied are the novels A Disposable matter, The Last Generation, and We Are the Weather Makers. The Films that I studied were An Inconvenient Truth and The Day After Tomorrow. I found the characters had to go through really hard times when disasters accrued because of the global warming that affected their surroundings. This could be prevented if mankind started to care for the environment more by using less fossil fuels. How do the characters deal with the impact mankind has made to the environment? One of the main themes that was clearly obvious in the texts is that the characters had to put up with unexpected and extreme weather from global warming created by mankind. In The Day After Tomorrow, scientist Jack Hall discovers that the earth will go back to the ice age in 100 to 1000 years times due to Greenhouse Gas emissions. He presents his findings to a UN meeting where the other characters do not believe him. Days after the meeting the weather had started to take unexpected turns for the worse with the waters in the Pacific dropping in temperature. The ice age had begun sooner than he thought. Characters panicked in fear as tornados, strong and powerful hurricanes and tsunamis were accruing. In the film An Inconvenient Truth is different as the characters put up with the unusual weather as they are oblivious that the weather was created by mankind. Example when character, Al Gore had gone to different cities to explain how powerful hurricanes and strange weather patterns were happening, the characters didn’t even know it was them who caused the problem. Both texts show that the characters dealt with the situation by not realizing it was them who were making the earth getting warmer creating the powerful weather. What
