Immigration is seen everywhere. People constantly pick up their belongings and move to another place to make a new, better life. In Scott Russell Sanders’ essay, he shows that moving has been seen in our past, and our present. He analyzes Salman Rushdie’s essay and portrays everything that deals with moving in a positive way, and illustrates everything dealing with staying put in a negative way. This helps develop his perspective about moving. After he says that moving is positive, he states that he disagrees with Rushdie, and shares that he believes one can only grow when they stay put and are settled. Sanders sets his perspective by analyzing Rushdie’s essay. Sanders says that in our past, we have constantly been moving. He says that we have been sailors, explorers, cowboys, prospectors, speculators, backwoods ramblers, and rainbow-chasers. Sanders is using this technique to make the reader want to be like the people of their past. By letting the reader know that from the beginning, our heroes have moved around, everyone wants to be like their heroes, and therefore it makes everyone want to move. Sanders’ perspective is portrayed by relating to moving in a positive way. Sanders relates back to Rushdie when he says that people are stronger because they move. By stating this idea, it makes people want to move more to become stronger. Also, Sanders says that if you use up your resources, such as fish, all you have to do is move. This portrays moving as an easy task that you can do once you use your own resources. Sanders’ ideas about moving are portrayed as positive by showing the negative affects of standing still. This technique is affective because the people see that they will be in trouble if they stand still, which eventually causes them to move.
