Iliad vs. Troy The movie, Troy, is a poor adaptation of the Iliad of Homer because of a lot of inconsistencies and discrepancies on the story line and the omissions of significant characters in the story. Particular of which is the exclusion of the gods and goddesses who were fervently engaged in the battles and the outcome of the war. What really missed out in the movie is the story of the golden apple which is the very reason of the war. This part is what interests me the most at the start. In the movie, the story began in the kingdom of Sparta where Hector and Paris, princes of Troy, are forming an agreement of peace with Menelaus the king of Sparta. Until the revelation that Helen, queen of Sparta, was having an affair with Paris. She then joined the prince to sail back to Troy for her to become his wife. This later on found out by Menelaus and the war eventually began. This totally differs from the epic because it was already nine years since the strife started that the story began. On the first encounter at the shore of the kingdom of Troy, Menelaus and Paris decided to settle the impending war between them since it all originated from a single woman they both desired. So the two fought and as depicted also in Iliad, Paris lost, but as he about to be killed by Menelaus, he ran off and search protection from his brother. Hector, as loving brother as he was, stabbed Menelaus by his sword, ending his life. The book says that Paris was saved by Aphrodite on that encounter and that Menelaus was never killed. Menelaus was able to came back home to his homeland with Helen. Briseis was not Hector’s cousin let alone a Trojan. She is just a beautiful maiden sacked from the streets to be a prize for Achilles. It was never mentioned in the text that Achilles had deep affections with Briseis as shown in the movie. There is no romantic episode whatsoever. The
