Case Study: IKEA Name: Erin Cotter Student Number: 4070951 Word Count: 702 Figure [ 1 ] IKEA is a Swedish company that designs and sells ready-to-assemble home ware. It is currently dominating markets in 32 countries and will soon expand into North America. There are many reasons for IKEA’s success, although it can mostly be contributed to their good quality products at low prices. This is achieved by defining the company’s competitive priorities which can be clearly seen in figure 1. The company’s main focus is price. Through every step of the design and manufacturing process IKEA focuses on cutting costs, however while the products they produce are cheap they are not ‘cheapo’ and they still hold sufficient quality. IKEA then looks at making the product efficient and practical, especially in terms of transportation. The product can be redesigned several times to ensure that the maximum number of items can be transported at any one time, and that the items can easily be assembled at home to reduced any inconvenience to the customer. The desirability of the product is then considered. While the base model is the cheapest, ‘high end’ alternatives are also given for those people who are willing to spend more for a product with more features. As IKEA relies so heavily on their low prices for success, they have implemented a specialised design process, which ensures they can cut costs at every stage. IKEA’s design process begins with a identifying a need in the market. A team of designers is then given the task of coming up with a new product to satisfy this need, and the best design is selected to go through to the next stage. This competition between designers ensures everyone is working hard to create a quality, desirable product for the lowest price, and it is also a better environment for generating creative ideas.
